Why do we love this wine?

Très Vielle Vigne translates to “ancient vines”- in the case of this wine, we’re talking 80 years old. Sitting on a steep southeast-facing slope with the trademark granitic soils of Beaujolais, these vines deliver on concentration and structure. The aspect is perfect for gentle morning ripening, and the granite lends energy to the wine. This wine is the pride of the Domaine, with deep and dark flavours and unending complexity to discover. Despite the usual thought that Beaujolais can’t age, this wine still has years of delight under the cork- particularly from the 2020 vintage. This is modern Beaujolais at its best.

What a beautiful nose of violets and ripe (but not overripe) blackberries this has! So succulent, with a wonderful interplay of creaminess, fine tannins and mineral freshness on the concentrated, medium-bodied palate. Very long, velvety finish with so much finesse! Drink or hold.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine comes from 80-year-old vines on steep granite slopes, which is exceptional even for Moulin-à-Vent, Beaujolais' most structured cru. The ancient vines produce concentrated fruit with remarkable depth, while the granitic terroir adds mineral complexity and aging potential that defies the common perception of Beaujolais as simple, early-drinking wine. The southeast exposure provides ideal ripening conditions, creating a wine that showcases modern Beaujolais winemaking at its most sophisticated level.

Unlike most Beaujolais which are best consumed young, this Très Vieille Vigne has significant aging potential thanks to the concentrated fruit from ancient vines and the structured terroir of Moulin-à-Vent. The 2020 vintage was particularly exceptional, providing the backbone for extended cellaring. You can expect this wine to develop beautifully over the next 8-12 years, with the granite-driven minerality becoming more pronounced and the fruit flavours evolving into more complex secondary characteristics.

The medium body and mineral-driven structure make this wine incredibly food-friendly, particularly with dishes that complement its blackberry and spice profile. Classic pairings include roasted duck, lamb with herbs, or aged cheeses like Comté or aged cheddar. The wine's minerality and moderate tannins also work beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, charcuterie, or even grilled salmon, showcasing Gamay's versatility when grown on serious terroir.

The 94-point James Suckling score reflects the exceptional quality that comes from combining ancient vines with prime Moulin-à-Vent terroir. Critics recognise that this represents a pinnacle expression of what Beaujolais can achieve when treated with the same respect as Burgundy. The complexity, structure, and aging potential demonstrated here challenges preconceptions about the region, while the 2020 vintage provided ideal conditions for showcasing the full potential of these remarkable old vines.

Granite soils are fundamental to Moulin-à-Vent's reputation as the most age-worthy Beaujolais cru, providing excellent drainage while retaining enough moisture for the vines during dry periods. The granite imparts a distinctive mineral backbone and energy to the wine, creating tension that balances the rich fruit from the old vines. This geological foundation also contributes to the wine's longevity, as the mineral structure provides a framework that allows the wine to develop complexity over many years rather than fading quickly.
