Why do we love this wine?

A real 'for those in the know' kind of wine, the Mistral is one outrageously good value bottle of wine. From the legendary hands of one of the region's best, this grenache dominant blend (80%) is consistently used as a benchmark around the Mofo office for what great CDR (Côtes du Rhône) can and should represent. Only cement and stainless steel are used for ageing, allowing the purity and complexity of the fruit to shine through. The resulting wine is so very vibrant, satisfyingly spicy, and showcases a spectrum of blackberry and raspberry flavours. Dive in, this is completely delicious.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine represents the artisanal approach that separates quality Côtes du Rhône from mass-produced versions. Domaine de Ferrand uses only cement and stainless steel for ageing, avoiding oak to preserve the pure expression of grenache fruit. The 80% grenache blend showcases the variety's natural spiciness and berry complexity, while the producer's reputation as one of the region's finest ensures meticulous vineyard management and winemaking standards that deliver exceptional value.

Grenache thrives in the Mediterranean climate of the southern Rhône, where hot, dry conditions concentrate its natural fruit flavours and develop its characteristic spicy notes. As the dominant variety in this blend at 80%, it provides the wine's vibrant blackberry and raspberry character while contributing to the medium body and textural complexity. Grenache's ability to retain freshness despite warm growing conditions makes it perfectly suited to the Côtes du Rhône terroir.

The wine's spicy, savoury character and medium body make it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with Mediterranean cuisine that echoes its regional origins. The blackberry and plum flavours complement grilled lamb, herb-crusted chicken, or ratatouille beautifully. The textural complexity and spice notes also pair excellently with aged cheeses, charcuterie, or hearty pasta dishes with tomato-based sauces.

As a 2024 release, this wine represents the fresh, vibrant style that makes young Côtes du Rhône so appealing for immediate enjoyment. The recent vintage preserves the bright berry flavours and natural acidity that grenache develops in good years, while the cement and stainless steel ageing maintains fruit purity without adding tannin weight. This approach creates a wine that's approachable now but will develop additional complexity over the next 2-3 years.

A 4.1 Vivino rating from thousands of consumer reviews indicates this wine consistently exceeds expectations, particularly impressive for a Côtes du Rhône at this price point. This score reflects the wine's ability to deliver both immediate pleasure and genuine complexity, validating its reputation as a benchmark example of the appellation. The rating suggests drinkers appreciate both its approachable fruit character and the underlying quality that comes from Domaine de Ferrand's expert winemaking.
