This is Côtes du Rhône, levelled up a notch (or twelve). Sourced from just outside the borders of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this wine represents completely outstanding value.

Why do we love this wine?

A real 'for those in the know' kind of wine, the Mistral is one outrageously good value bottle of wine. From the legendary hands of Domaine de Ferrand, this grenache dominant blend (80%) is consistently used as a benchmark around the Mofo office for what great CDR (Côtes du Rhône) can and should represent. Only cement and stainless steel are used for ageing, allowing the purity and complexity of the fruit to shine through. The resulting wine is so very vibrant, satisfyingly spicy, and showcases a spectrum of blackberry and raspberry flavours. Dive in, this is completely delicious.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Mistral stands out through its grenache-dominant blend (80%) and the producer's decision to use only cement and stainless steel for ageing, avoiding oak entirely. This approach preserves the pure fruit character that Côtes du Rhône is famous for, while the old vine fruit adds exceptional concentration and complexity. Domaine de Ferrand's reputation as a benchmark producer means they're extracting maximum expression from their terroir.

Grenache thrives in the Mediterranean climate of the southern Rhône, where hot, dry conditions concentrate its natural berry flavours and spice characteristics. As the dominant grape in this blend, it provides the wine's core of blackberry and raspberry fruit, while contributing the allspice notes that make Rhône reds so distinctive. The grape's ability to retain freshness even in warm vintages makes it perfect for the vibrant, food-friendly style this wine represents.

Old vines, typically 25+ years old, produce smaller yields but more concentrated fruit due to their established root systems that dig deep into the soil. These mature vines naturally regulate their own production, leading to grapes with greater intensity and complexity. In this Mistral, the old vine fruit contributes to the wine's satisfying depth and the spectrum of flavours that make it such exceptional value.

Serve this medium-bodied red slightly below room temperature (around 16-18°C) to highlight its vibrant fruit and spice characteristics. The textured, savoury style pairs beautifully with grilled meats, Mediterranean herbs, and dishes with earthy elements like mushrooms or roasted vegetables. Decanting for 30 minutes will help open up the wine's complexity, though it's delicious straight from the bottle too.

The 2022 vintage in the Rhône Valley benefited from excellent growing conditions, with warm, dry weather that allowed grenache to reach optimal ripeness while retaining natural acidity. This vintage is showing exceptional balance between fruit concentration and freshness, which explains why this wine has earned 'Killer Vintage' recognition. The combination of ideal weather and Domaine de Ferrand's expertise has produced a wine that perfectly captures what great Côtes du Rhône should be.
