Why do we love this wine?

Although their work has been long-running, they have maintained small holdings of land which are all manually and organically cared for. The steep, south-east facing slopes of this Northern Rhone vineyard gives life to a powerful wine that show the full spectrum of syrah; add in some whole-bunch fermentation, heavy extraction of the skins, and light influences from oak and you arrive at the Pur Granit. The minerality of the palate speaks of the terroir, with deep reaching blue fruits accentuated by the spicy and intensely structured finish. The Lionnet family have essentially crafted their own clone of syrah by this stage, something truly special to gawk at. You can search the world over, and you’ll never find anything like this beauty.

Vinous

Vinous

Vibrant, spice- and mineral-tinged dark berry and cherry aromas are complemented by suggestions of olive, licorice and pungent flowers. Energetic, appealingly sweet black and blue fruit and candied violet flavors deepen with air while a smoky mineral element adds lift and back-end cut. Velvety tannins add gentle grip to an impressively long, floral-driven finish that leaves a repeating floral note behind

Frequently Asked Questions

The Lionnet family has developed their own unique clone of Syrah through generations of careful selection, creating something truly distinctive in the Northern Rhône landscape. The combination of steep, south-east facing granite slopes, whole-bunch fermentation, and heavy skin extraction produces a wine with exceptional minerality that speaks directly of its terroir. This isn't just another Cornas - it's a testament to how small-scale, organic viticulture can create wines that are impossible to replicate elsewhere.

Serve this powerful Syrah at 16-18°C to allow its complex aromatics of blackberry, plum, and allspice to fully express themselves. The wine's intense structure and spicy finish make it perfect for rich, gamey dishes like braised lamb shanks, venison, or aged beef with herbs. The granite-driven minerality also pairs beautifully with earthy mushroom dishes or strong cheeses like aged Roquefort.

With 95 points from Vinous and 96 points from TastingBook, this Cornas sits in the elite tier of Northern Rhône wines. These scores reflect not just the wine's immediate appeal, but its exceptional balance of power and finesse that critics recognise as hallmarks of great Cornas. The single vineyard designation further emphasises the wine's pedigree, indicating fruit sourced from one exceptional site rather than blended parcels.

While this Cornas is drinking beautifully now, showing its full spectrum of Syrah character, it's built for the long haul. The heavy extraction, granite minerality, and intense structure suggest this wine will continue evolving for 15-20 years, developing more complex tertiary flavours of leather, game, and forest floor. If you're drinking now, decant for 2-3 hours to allow the tannins to soften and the aromatics to open fully.

The Lionnet family's commitment to organic, manual viticulture on these steep granite slopes isn't just about sustainability - it's essential for expressing the true character of this unique terroir. Hand-harvesting allows for precise selection of only the finest grapes, while organic practices ensure the granite soils' mineral complexity translates directly into the wine. This labour-intensive approach, combined with their small holdings, means every bottle represents an authentic expression of place that industrial methods simply cannot achieve.
