Why do we love this wine?
We talk about age in wine a lot, whether it be the vines, the bottles, or oak barrels. Here, we’re going to introduce you to Domaine Lionnet: the Northern Rhône producer who are coming up on five centuries of winemaking. Now that’s an age to gawk at. Although their work has been long-running, they have maintained small holdings of land which are all manually and organically cared for. The steep, south facing slopes of Cornas give life to powerful wines that show the full spectrum of syrah (shiraz to us Aussies); add in some whole-bunch fermentation, heavy extraction of the skins, and light influences from oak and you arrive at the Terre Brûlée. Like all wines from this Domaine, this will command your attention: lifted aromatics of violets, rose and cherry appear out of the glass with unmistakeable meaty edges. The palate delivers strong and spicy, weaving between balsamic, licorice, and smoky black plums. This is a keeper, one to treasure for many years to come.

Vinous
Vinous Suave, mineral-accented blackberry, cassis, cherry compote and exotic spice qualities on the intensely perfumed nose, along with a slowly emerging floral nuance. Sappy and penetrating on the palate, displaying powerful lift to the concentrated black and blue fruit, floral pastille and spicecake flavors. Finishes extremely long and spicy, with pronounced mineral thrust, a hint of smoky bacon and gently chewy, well-knit tannins.

Jeb Dunnuck
The 2019 Cornas Terre Brûlée showed brilliantly, with an exotic style in its darker fruits as well as notes of camphor, balsam wood, plums, and ground pepper. It has tons of minerality on the palate and is full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful, with enough tannins to warrant a solid 5-7 years of bottle age. It’s a beautiful, classic, impeccably made Cornas that will have two decades of longevity.
