Why do we love this wine?

We talk about age in wine a lot, whether it be the vines, the bottles, or oak barrels. Here, we’re going to introduce you to Domaine Lionnet: the Northern Rhône producer who are coming up on five centuries of winemaking. Now that’s an age to gawk at. Although their work has been long-running, they have maintained small holdings of land which are all manually and organically cared for. The steep, south facing slopes of Cornas give life to powerful wines that show the full spectrum of syrah (shiraz to us Aussies); add in some whole-bunch fermentation, heavy extraction of the skins, and light influences from oak and you arrive at the Terre Brûlée. Like all wines from this Domaine, this will command your attention: lifted aromatics of violets, rose and cherry appear out of the glass with unmistakeable meaty edges. The palate delivers strong and spicy, weaving between balsamic, licorice, and smoky black plums. This is a keeper, one to treasure for many years to come.

Vinous

Vinous

Vinous Suave, mineral-accented blackberry, cassis, cherry compote and exotic spice qualities on the intensely perfumed nose, along with a slowly emerging floral nuance. Sappy and penetrating on the palate, displaying powerful lift to the concentrated black and blue fruit, floral pastille and spicecake flavors. Finishes extremely long and spicy, with pronounced mineral thrust, a hint of smoky bacon and gently chewy, well-knit tannins.

The 2019 Cornas Terre Brûlée showed brilliantly, with an exotic style in its darker fruits as well as notes of camphor, balsam wood, plums, and ground pepper. It has tons of minerality on the palate and is full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful, with enough tannins to warrant a solid 5-7 years of bottle age. It’s a beautiful, classic, impeccably made Cornas that will have two decades of longevity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cornas is one of the Northern Rhône's most distinctive appellations, producing wines exclusively from Syrah grown on steep, granite-based slopes. Unlike the Southern Rhône's blends, Cornas must be 100% Syrah, resulting in intensely concentrated, age-worthy wines. The appellation's south-facing terraces capture maximum sunlight, creating the powerful, mineral-driven character that sets Cornas apart from softer Southern Rhône styles.

Whole-bunch fermentation, where grape clusters are fermented with stems intact, adds structural complexity and aromatic lift to this Cornas. The stems contribute tannins and spice notes while creating more elegant, perfumed aromatics - explaining the violet and rose notes in this wine. This technique also helps preserve the wine's natural acidity, ensuring it will develop gracefully over the next decade or more.

Northern Rhône Syrah from Cornas is renowned for its exceptional aging potential due to its high tannin structure, natural acidity, and concentrated fruit. The 2019 vintage's combination of power and elegance, enhanced by organic farming practices that promote soil health, creates wines that typically peak between 8-15 years. The meaty, mineral complexity will continue evolving, developing tertiary flavours of leather, earth, and game.

Dual 96-point scores from both Jeb Dunnuck and Vinous represent exceptional recognition for a Cornas, placing this wine among the appellation's elite. These scores reflect the wine's perfect balance of power and finesse, its expression of terroir, and its aging potential. Such high ratings from respected critics often indicate wines that capture the essence of their vintage and region while showing remarkable winemaking skill.

Organic certification at Domaine du Lionnet reflects a commitment to soil health and biodiversity that directly influences wine quality. Organic practices encourage deeper root systems and more concentrated flavours, while avoiding synthetic chemicals allows the true terroir expression to shine through. The manual care of their small vineyard holdings ensures each vine receives individual attention, contributing to the wine's remarkable concentration and authentic sense of place.
