Why do we love this wine?

With their estate situated on the banks of the Rhône in Côte Rôtie (just south of Lyon), Domaine Garons ‘Les Triotes’ syrah will whisk you away to those steep, sun soaked vineyards with each and every sip. And sip, you shall. A family run producer dating waaaaay back to 1475 (that is not a typo), Domaine Garon prides itself on a style of elegance and restraint brought about by diverse terroirs, precise vineyard blending and deliberately subtle oak so as to entice back and again. No great wine should deliver every element after just one sip, for its complexity should continue to build, entice and beckon. And won’t you be glad you’ve scored yourself a box of this as your intrigue ceases to stop. Pair with ratatouille generously dolloped on slices of toasted baguette.

Frequently Asked Questions

Côte Rôtie represents the northern Rhône's most prestigious appellation, where steep granite slopes and continental climate create wines of exceptional elegance compared to the more powerful southern Rhône styles. This Les Triotes showcases the classic northern Rhône character with its mineral backbone, savoury complexity, and restrained power that develops beautifully over time. The terroir's unique combination of schist and granite soils, combined with Domaine Garon's 500+ year winemaking heritage, produces a Syrah that's more about finesse than brute strength.

Northern Rhône Syrah from quality producers like Domaine Garon typically shows beautifully for 15-20 years, with this 2020 vintage currently in its youthful phase. The wine's medium body and elegant structure suggest it will reward patience, developing more complex tertiary flavours of leather, game, and forest floor over the next 5-8 years. However, the deliberately subtle oak treatment means it's already approachable now, making it versatile for both immediate enjoyment and long-term cellaring.

The cool continental climate and granite-schist soils of Côte Rôtie produce Syrah with a completely different personality than warm-climate Australian Shiraz. Where Australian versions often emphasise ripe fruit and bold flavours, this French expression showcases mineral precision, black olive complexity, and allspice nuances that reflect its terroir. The restrained winemaking approach, with subtle oak and precise blending from diverse vineyard sites, creates a wine that's more about elegance and food compatibility than immediate fruit impact.

The wine's savoury profile and mineral backbone make it exceptional with game meats like venison or duck, where the black olive and allspice notes complement rich, earthy flavours perfectly. Aged hard cheeses, particularly those from the Rhône region, create beautiful harmony with the wine's textured mouthfeel. The medium body and elegant structure also pair wonderfully with herb-crusted lamb or mushroom-based dishes, where the wine's complexity can shine without overwhelming delicate flavours.

Domaine Garon's 545-year winemaking heritage places them among Côte Rôtie's most historic producers, yet their wines often represent exceptional value compared to more famous northern Rhône estates. The 4.5 Vivino rating and 'Iconic Producer' recognition reflect quality that typically commands much higher prices from celebrity vignerons. Their philosophy of elegance over power, combined with old vine fruit and traditional winemaking methods, delivers authentic Côte Rôtie character at a fraction of the cost of comparable wines from marquee producers.
