Domaine Garon Seyssuel Jardins de Rome Syrah 2019
- Textured, savoury
- RhĂ´ne Valley
Domaine Garon is a proudly family owned winery that dates all the way back to 1475 and although the world was a very different place back then; their RhĂ´ne wines remain a benchmark for quality and precision to this very day. The Jardins de Rome (Gardens of Rome) is a straight shiraz that tips its hat to the history of this producer that dates back to the renaissance. Its savoury palate of black olive tapenade, soft spice and brambly notes that sit alongside subtle red fruit nuances. From their southwest facing vineyards just north of Vienne of predominantly schist soils, this drop will whisk you away to a place both timeless and unique.Â

Reviews
Vinous
âPowerful, mineral-driven dark berry, cherry pit and floral aromas show excellent clarity and take on subtle cola and licorice notes with air. Concentrated but lively as well, offering intense blackberry, cassis and violet pastille flavors underscored by a vein of juicy acidity. Smoothly blends richness and delicacy and finishes impressively long and precise, with even tannins and a resonating mineral note.â
Full price $90.00 from the producer.

Region
RhĂ´ne Valley
The RhĂ´ne Valley is a dichotomous beast. The North is ruled by Syrah (=Shiraz), with or without a touch of Viognier for perfume, while in the South you'll find all matter of blends such as those of Chateauneuf du Pape (about thirteen varieties in these on average, at last count...) and the origins of the GSM (heard of CĂ´tes du RhĂ´ne?). The Northern RhĂ´ne is Australia's ultimate sparring partner in the 'we say Shiraz, you say Syrah' fencing match. With such famous names as CĂ´tes-RĂ´tie, Gigondas and Crozes-Hermitage (remember when Grange was called Hermitage...?), you can bet your bottom dollar - and the few hundred that go with it - that you'll need to be ticking off a few of the better ones before you kick it. Don't discount the whites though. Some of the finest whites you'll ever try come from Condrieu (the most sensual Viognier you'll try, at a price), and the lesser (in cost, at least) blends, often based on Grenache Blanc or Viognier. And watch out for dry, RhĂ´ne rose - it's become so popular that the industry bodies are warning the region not to over-produce. Look out Kiwi Sav Blanc!
