Why do we love this wine?

This single vineyard series is all about showcasing the diversity and intrigue in Barossa's many sub-regions. Sitting and tasting all of these wines side-by-side, its phenomenal to see that marked differences in the vineyards. Nuances of black olive and vegemite, blood plum and cocoa are just some of the reasons we've gone bonkers about this wine. You're lucky to be getting it at the start of its peak drinking window, which luckily will extend for many years still to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine is part of First Drop's single vineyard series that specifically highlights the unique terroir of Greenock, a sub-region within the Barossa Valley. The Greenock area is known for producing Shiraz with distinctive savoury characteristics, which explains the wine's complex flavour profile featuring black olive and vegemite notes alongside the more typical plum and cocoa. Single vineyard wines like this offer a pure expression of place, allowing you to taste the specific soil, climate and elevation that makes each Barossa sub-region unique.

You're fortunate to be getting this wine right at the beginning of its peak drinking window, meaning it's already showing beautifully now but has significant cellaring potential ahead. Given its full-bodied structure, high-quality Barossa Shiraz, and the 96-point rating from James Halliday, this wine should continue developing complexity for at least another 8-12 years. The rich tannin structure and concentrated fruit will allow it to evolve gracefully, developing more tertiary flavours like leather, tobacco and earth while maintaining its core fruit integrity.

The wine's meaty, savoury character with notes of black olive and vegemite makes it perfect for rich, umami-driven dishes. Think slow-cooked lamb shanks, beef brisket, or even a hearty mushroom risotto that can match its intensity. The plum and cocoa notes also complement dishes with slight sweetness, such as barbecued ribs with a molasses glaze or dark chocolate-based desserts. Its full-bodied nature means it won't be overwhelmed by strong cheeses like aged cheddar or blue cheese.

The 96-point rating from James Halliday reflects the wine's exceptional balance between power and finesse, which is the hallmark of great Barossa Shiraz. The complex flavour profile combining fruit, savoury and earthy elements demonstrates masterful winemaking and excellent vineyard expression. Single vineyard wines often receive higher scores because they offer a pure, unblended expression of terroir, and this Greenock site clearly produces fruit of exceptional quality. The wine's ability to showcase both immediate appeal and long-term cellaring potential also contributes to its critical acclaim.

The 'Fat of the Land' name reflects the richness and abundance that comes from exceptional vineyard sites in the Barossa Valley. This poetic name suggests the wine captures the essence of fertile, well-established vineyards that produce concentrated, flavourful fruit. First Drop uses this designation for their single vineyard series to emphasise how each wine represents the best expression of its specific location. The name also hints at the wine's full-bodied, rich character - it's literally the 'fat' or richest expression of what this particular Greenock vineyard can produce.
