Why do we love this wine?

This is one to really sit and savour. A blend fruit from three immaculate vineyards in Ebenezer, Seppeltsfield, and Greenock sees 20 months in French and American oak barrels, bolstering this wine to unbelievable heights. It's a mammoth of a drop, laced with dutch licorice, a variety of baking spices and fresh rolling tobacco, and of course that deeply layered black fruit pallet. This has wow-factor in so many ways, it'll leave you speechless.

Frequently Asked Questions

The extended maturation in French and American oak barrels transforms this Barossa Shiraz into a complex powerhouse that showcases the best of three premium vineyard sites. This lengthy ageing process allows the wine to develop its signature Dutch liquorice and baking spice characteristics while integrating the oak seamlessly with the intense black fruit core. The result is a wine that earned 96 points from James Halliday, demonstrating how patience in winemaking creates extraordinary depth and structure.

The three distinct vineyard sites in Ebenezer, Seppeltsfield, and Greenock each contribute unique characteristics that reflect the Barossa's diverse microclimates and soil types. Ebenezer's warmer climate intensifies the blackberry and blood plum flavours, while Seppeltsfield's elevation adds structural complexity and spice notes. Greenock's ancient soils contribute to the wine's mineral backbone and tobacco nuances, creating a blend that captures the full spectrum of Barossa Valley terroir in one exceptional bottle.

This wine's rich, full-bodied nature and complex spice profile make it perfect for hearty dishes that can match its intensity. The Dutch liquorice and clove notes pair beautifully with slow-cooked lamb shanks or beef brisket, while the tobacco undertones complement grilled portobello mushrooms or aged hard cheeses. The wine's structure and tannins also make it an excellent match for barbecued meats with smoky, peppery rubs that echo the wine's own spice complexity.

With its impressive 96-point rating and full-bodied structure, this Shiraz has excellent cellaring potential of 10-15 years from vintage. The combination of premium fruit from three top Barossa sites and 20 months of oak maturation has created a wine with the tannin structure and acidity needed for long-term ageing. As it develops, expect the intense black fruit to evolve into more complex secondary flavours while the spice and tobacco notes become more integrated and refined.

First Drop has built a reputation for creating small-batch, premium wines that showcase the exceptional quality possible from carefully selected Barossa Valley vineyards. Their approach of blending fruit from multiple premium sites like Ebenezer, Seppeltsfield, and Greenock demonstrates their commitment to complexity and terroir expression rather than single-vineyard simplicity. The 'Small Batch' designation on this wine reflects their philosophy of quality over quantity, ensuring each bottle represents the pinnacle of Barossa Shiraz craftsmanship.
