Why do we love this wine?

Like most Margaret River wineries, Flametree is best known for its chardonnay, cabernet and cabernet blends. If you are a regular here at the ‘Fo, you’ve seen the chardonnay and cabernet from several vintages. We’ve now made the cab merlot another regular, with this being our second vintage of it. Flametree has thrown in small bits of malbec and petit verdot as well, making this truly a Bordeaux-style blend. It’s full of ripe fruit like blackberry, cassis and red currants, all supported by hints of cocoa, earthiness and fine tannins. You can drink this the moment it arrives at your door or try to be patient for up to 10 years. Good luck with that!

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine follows the classic Bordeaux Left Bank tradition by combining cabernet sauvignon and merlot as the foundation, then adding small amounts of malbec and petit verdot for complexity. These traditional Bordeaux varietals work synergistically - the cabernet provides structure and tannins, merlot adds softness and fruit, while malbec and petit verdot contribute colour intensity and spice notes that enhance the wine's overall depth and ageing potential.

Margaret River's Mediterranean climate with its warm, dry summers and cool ocean breezes creates ideal conditions for ripening Bordeaux varietals slowly and evenly. This extended ripening period allows the development of intense fruit flavours like blackberry and cassis while maintaining natural acidity. The region's gravelly soils and maritime influence help produce the fine tannin structure that makes this wine both approachable now and capable of ageing gracefully for up to a decade.

The wine's rich fruit profile and fine tannins make it perfect for red meat dishes like grilled lamb with rosemary, beef wellington, or aged steaks. The earthy undertones and cocoa hints complement mushroom-based dishes and hard cheeses beautifully. For something different, try it with dark chocolate desserts or charcuterie boards featuring cured meats and aged cheeses - the wine's complexity will enhance these bold flavours.

Flametree has earned recognition as a Five Red Star Halliday Rated Winery, placing it among Australia's elite producers. While the winery built its reputation on exceptional chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon, their consistent quality across varietals demonstrates masterful winemaking. Their ability to craft complex Bordeaux-style blends that showcase Margaret River's unique terroir while maintaining varietal integrity has made them a favourite among wine enthusiasts seeking premium Australian wines.

This 2018 vintage is beautifully balanced for immediate enjoyment, showing ripe fruit expression and integrated tannins that won't overwhelm your palate. However, the wine's structure and quality suggest excellent cellaring potential for up to 10 years. During this time, the fruit flavours will evolve from primary blackberry and cassis to more complex secondary notes, while the tannins will soften further and the earthy, cocoa elements will become more pronounced, creating a more nuanced drinking experience.
