Why do we love this wine?

This is what you call next level: where the quality of fruit, winemaking, oak, and ageing is all a rung (or two) above most others. Geoff and Scott of Geoff Merrill select the best barrels coming off McLaren Vale and Coonawarra vineyards 14 months after vintage. These are then blended and returned to a mix of new and seasoned American and French barrels. Yep, that’s 200% oak, with 30 months in it before bottling. You can probably imagine the intensity you could expect right off the bottling line, but nearly a decade out from vintage and this wine still looks superb. Abundance of anise, black fruits, leather, tar and smoke in a generous hug of tannins. Like sinking into a velvet couch, this wine will make you feel luxurious.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Reserve represents Geoff Merrill's top-tier selection process, where only the finest barrels from McLaren Vale and Coonawarra are chosen 14 months post-vintage. The wine then undergoes an intensive '200% oak' treatment - meaning it's aged in both new and seasoned American and French barrels for 30 months. This extended oak regime creates extraordinary complexity and structure that distinguishes it from their standard releases.

Despite the intense oak treatment at bottling, this wine has beautifully integrated over its decade-long journey. The initial oak intensity has mellowed into sophisticated layers of anise, black fruits, leather, tar and smoke. The tannins have evolved from potentially overwhelming to luxuriously enveloping, creating what's described as sinking into a velvet couch - a testament to quality Cabernet Sauvignon's ability to transform with proper cellaring.

Blending fruit from McLaren Vale and Coonawarra is a classic Australian technique that marries the best of both regions' strengths. McLaren Vale contributes rich, generous fruit flavours and full body, while Coonawarra adds structure, elegance and the region's famous terra rossa minerality. This combination creates a more complex and balanced wine than either region could achieve alone, particularly important for a Reserve-level Cabernet Sauvignon.

The '200% oak' refers to the wine being aged in oak twice - first in barrels for 14 months, then selected barrels are blended and returned to a mix of new and seasoned American and French oak for another 30 months. This intensive process extracts maximum flavour compounds, tannins and structural elements from the wood. While initially intense, this treatment provides the backbone for long-term ageing and creates the wine's signature coffee, leather and oaky characteristics.

A 98-point rating from Winestate Magazine places this wine in the elite tier of Australian Cabernet Sauvignon, representing exceptional quality that few wines achieve. Combined with 95 points from Wine Orbit and Five Star ratings across multiple publications, this wine demonstrates consistent recognition from Australia's most respected wine critics. Such scores typically indicate a wine that showcases perfect varietal expression, regional character, and winemaking excellence.
