Why do we love this wine?

The Clayvin vineyard is considered one of Marlborough’s most decorated pinot sites. A high-density plantings, from over 30 years ago - now certified organic. Everything here is done with meticulous care, attention and love. From hand picking to basket pressing, to a long ageing of the highest quality French oak for ageing. Once this pinot is ready to set sail, one can be assured of a confident intensity, an elegant restraint and ever present structure. The fruit is classic NZ pinot; primarily strawberry and cherry with an underlying earthiness attributed to the clay soils of the vineyard. An insanely beautiful pinot with incredibly silken texture and length, that has a very long life ahead of it. A pinot given the ‘Rolls Royce’ treatment from vineyard to winery.

Seductively complex and enticing with sweet cherry, mixed spice, game, warm mushroom and assorted nut aromas, it's plush and satisfying on the palate displaying silky flow backed by fine polished tannins. Immediately appealing with gorgeous savoury nuances. At its best: now to 2032.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Clayvin vineyard is one of Marlborough's most decorated Pinot Noir sites, featuring high-density plantings established over 30 years ago on distinctive clay soils. These clay soils are crucial for Pinot Noir as they retain moisture while providing excellent drainage, contributing to the wine's characteristic earthiness and mineral complexity. The vineyard's certified organic status and three decades of vine maturity create ideal conditions for producing concentrated, terroir-driven fruit that expresses the unique character of this exceptional site.

The 2018 Clayvin Pinot Noir was crafted with exceptional longevity in mind, featuring extended ageing in premium French oak and meticulous winemaking techniques. Pinot Noir from established vineyards like Clayvin typically reaches peak drinking between 5-10 years after vintage, meaning this 2018 is entering its prime drinking window now while retaining significant cellaring potential. The wine's silken texture and structural backbone suggest it will continue evolving gracefully for another 8-12 years, developing more complex tertiary flavours of forest floor, leather, and spice.

This medium-bodied Pinot Noir's savoury profile and earthy undertones make it exceptionally versatile with food, particularly excelling with dishes that echo its mushroom and spice characteristics. The wine's silken texture and cherry fruit complement roasted duck, lamb with herbs, or wild mushroom risotto beautifully. Its organic vineyard origins and restrained elegance also pair wonderfully with sustainable, locally-sourced ingredients - think grilled salmon with earthy vegetables or aged cheeses that mirror the wine's complex, nuanced character.

The 96-point rating from Sam Kim reflects the exceptional quality achieved through Giesen's 'Rolls Royce' treatment from vineyard to bottle. Critics particularly value single-vineyard Pinot Noirs that express terroir authentically, and this wine delivers with its perfect balance of intensity and restraint. The combination of hand-picking, basket pressing, and premium French oak ageing creates layers of complexity that distinguish it from mass-produced wines, while the certified organic farming adds purity and authenticity that resonates with modern wine critics and consumers alike.

While Marlborough is globally famous for Sauvignon Blanc, its Pinot Noir sites like Clayvin showcase the region's cooler climate advantages and diverse soil types. Marlborough Pinot Noir typically displays brighter acidity and more pronounced fruit character than Central Otago, while offering more elegance and restraint than Hawke's Bay examples. The clay soils at Clayvin specifically contribute an earthy minerality that's distinct from the schist soils of Central Otago, creating wines with excellent structure and ageing potential that rival premium Burgundian expressions.
