Henschke are the undisputed masters of the Barossa - looking at you Hill of Grace - this is a beautifully composed blend of shiraz from up to 50-year-old vines across the Eden and Barossa Valleys with cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot from handpicked vineyards in both regions. The 2022 vintage weighs in at 59% shiraz, 33% cabernet sauvignon, 6% cabernet franc and 2% merlot - a blend that's been fine-tuned to perfection. What a wine.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Big, bold and full-bodied from the first sip to the last drop. Concentrated dark forest fruits dominate, underscored by baking spices, sage and Dutch cocoa. Wonderfully pure black fruits roll through with a core of sweet fruit, supported by impeccably balanced fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity that keeps everything structured and focused. The finish is long, lingering and slightly warm - generous and approachable with exceptional persistence. This will comfortably age for 10-15 years (at least) but we think it's drinking like an absolute dream right now!

Frequently Asked Questions

The Keyneton Euphonium is a carefully crafted Shiraz blend that incorporates complementary varietals to add complexity and structure beyond what pure Shiraz can achieve. Henschke's blending expertise allows them to balance the power of Shiraz with other grapes that contribute different flavour compounds and tannin structures. This approach creates a more nuanced wine with greater ageing potential, as the different varietals mature at varying rates, adding layers of complexity over the wine's 10-15 year cellaring window.

The dual 96-point scores from James Suckling and Wine Pilot reflect the wine's exceptional balance between power and finesse - a hallmark of premium Barossa winemaking. Critics recognise Henschke's ability to extract concentrated dark fruit flavours while maintaining the fine-grained tannin structure that prevents the wine from becoming overly heavy. The wine's vibrant acidity and long finish demonstrate technical excellence in winemaking, showing how traditional Barossa intensity can be refined without losing character.

These complex aromatics emerge from a combination of the Barossa's warm climate influence and Henschke's winemaking techniques, likely including carefully managed oak integration and extended skin contact. The baking spices typically develop from both the natural compounds in ripe Shiraz grapes and subtle oak influence, while sage represents the herbaceous complexity that premium Barossa wines can achieve when fruit ripeness is perfectly balanced. These savoury elements provide counterpoint to the sweet dark fruits, creating the wine's sophisticated flavour profile.

Serve this wine at 16-18°C in large Bordeaux-style glasses to allow the concentrated aromas to develop properly and the fine-grained tannins to soften on the palate. Decanting for 30-60 minutes will help integrate the wine's powerful structure and allow the Dutch cocoa and dark forest fruit notes to emerge more clearly. The wine's generous, approachable nature means it doesn't require extensive breathing time, but a brief decant will enhance the drinking experience and showcase its exceptional persistence.

Currently drinking beautifully with vibrant primary fruit, this wine will gradually develop more complex tertiary flavours as the tannins integrate and the fruit concentration mellows. The sage and baking spice notes will likely become more prominent, while the dark forest fruits will evolve into more nuanced berry and dried fruit characteristics. Henschke's reputation for producing age-worthy wines suggests the vibrant acidity and fine tannin structure will support graceful development, with the wine potentially gaining leather, tobacco, and earthy complexity while retaining its core fruit integrity.
