Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Picture yourself, dining ‘alfresco’ with a drinkable, juicy cabernet alongside your BBQ on the deck. Celebrating the work of lyric poet John Shaw Neilson who lived at the cottage in South Australia’s famed Coonawarra region. A cabernet that will delight and yet, is plush enough to allow you to ‘empty’ your glass pretty quickly. We’re talking about drinking responsibly of course, although this drop might make you want to be a little naughty. Blackcurrants, vanilla and delicate spice underpin this flavoursome red. Quality cab.

Frequently Asked Questions

Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soil - a thin strip of red earth over limestone - creates ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon. This unique terroir produces wines with distinctive eucalyptus notes and exceptional structure, which you'll find beautifully expressed in The Bard's textured, savoury profile. The region's cool climate allows for slow ripening, developing complex blackcurrant flavours while maintaining natural acidity.

The 2019 vintage in Coonawarra was exceptional, producing concentrated fruit with excellent balance - reflected in this wine's 94-point International Wine Challenge rating. Vintage variation significantly impacts Cabernet Sauvignon's development, and 2019's favourable conditions allowed for optimal phenolic ripeness. This translates to The Bard's plush texture and immediate drinkability while retaining the structure for further cellaring.

The Bard's juicy, approachable style makes it perfect for BBQ fare, as suggested in its description, but its full-bodied nature and spice notes also complement rich dishes like lamb with rosemary or aged beef steaks. The vanilla undertones from oak ageing pair beautifully with grilled meats, while the blackcurrant intensity can stand up to strong cheeses and hearty stews.

While The Bard is designed to be immediately enjoyable - described as 'drinkable' and 'plush' - quality Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon typically develops beautifully over 5-10 years. The wine's current fruit-forward character will evolve into more complex secondary flavours of leather and tobacco, while the tannins will soften further. However, its current approachable style means there's no need to wait if you're seeking immediate pleasure.

Eucalyptus is a signature characteristic of premium Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, indicating authentic regional expression rather than a flaw. This herbaceous note, combined with the blackcurrant and spice, creates the 'textured, savoury' style that distinguishes Australian Cabernet from its international counterparts. The eucalyptus adds complexity and freshness, preventing the wine from becoming overly heavy despite its full-bodied nature.
