Why do we love this wine?

When young Beaujolais native Jean-Baptiste is asked what influences his winemaking, the response is simple: “passion guides me”. With an illustrious career, galavanting around the globe doing vintages from Australia’s McLaren Vale (Coriole) to USA’s Sonoma (Chalk Hill), and all over the Europe (including England) and with famous French producers, such as in Northern Rhone (Yves Cuilleron) Quite a curated apprenticeship, which ultimately lead to an insanely ambitious dream being realised. A rare opportunity to acquire the Domaine du Mont Joly, in Beaujolais. With these ancient granite soils, and 2.5 hectares of vines, it’s all about gamay and the unearthing of vast terroirs in Beaujolais-Villages.

Rich, deep fruits abound here; boysenberry and black cherry. Earthy notes are starting to show, but it’s the overlaying quality of fruit and tannins that offer an elegance and generosity unlike a typical Beaujolais. An excellent wine.

Already the deep nose of ripe black cherries and forest berries is a delight. Then comes the wonderful, textural richness of the palate and the elegant tannins that underlie it. Not quite as long as the first impression suggested, but the generous finish is beautifully balanced.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine showcases the exceptional potential of Beaujolais when crafted by skilled hands and grown on ancient granite soils. Unlike lighter, fruit-forward Beaujolais Nouveau styles, this Villages-level wine displays remarkable depth with boysenberry and black cherry flavours, complemented by emerging earthy complexity. The combination of elegant tannins and generous fruit creates a more structured, age-worthy expression that challenges preconceptions about Gamay's capabilities.

Jean-Baptiste Bachevillier's global winemaking journey - from Australia's McLaren Vale to Sonoma and prestigious French regions like Northern Rhone - brings a sophisticated perspective to traditional Beaujolais winemaking. His exposure to diverse terroirs and techniques allows him to maximise the potential of his 2.5-hectare Domaine du Mont Joly vineyard. This international expertise is evident in the wine's refined structure and the way he balances Gamay's natural fruitiness with textural complexity.

The wine's textured, savoury profile and allspice notes make it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with dishes that bridge rustic and refined styles. Classic pairings include roasted chicken with herbs, duck confit, or mushroom-based dishes that echo the wine's earthy undertones. The minerality from granite soils also complements charcuterie and aged cheeses, while the blueberry fruit notes work beautifully with game birds or pork with berry sauces.

This 2018 is drinking beautifully now, showing the perfect balance between youthful fruit intensity and developing complexity. The earthy notes mentioned in the tasting profile indicate the wine is entering its optimal drinking window, where primary fruit flavours harmonise with secondary characteristics. While Beaujolais Villages can age gracefully for 5-8 years, this wine's current integration of tannins and fruit suggests it's at a sweet spot for immediate enjoyment.

The 'Cult Producer' designation with a 90-point score reflects Jean-Baptiste's rapid rise to prominence in Beaujolais, despite being a relatively new domaine owner. This recognition acknowledges both his exceptional winemaking pedigree and his ability to express terroir authentically from his small 2.5-hectare property. Cult status in wine typically indicates limited production, high quality, and strong collector interest - suggesting this producer represents the new generation elevating Beaujolais' reputation globally.
