Fifteen years of age, old-vine, dry-grown Barossa shiraz from one of the valley's most respected family producers. This is exactly the kind of wine that makes patient people feel very, very smug. Kalleske have been farming their Barossa estate organically and biodynamically for generations — and the Eduard is their flagship statement.

Why do we love this wine?

Unfined, unfiltered and built without compromise, this is Barossa shiraz as serious as it gets. What was once a powerful, concentrated young red has evolved into something magnificently complex. The primary fruit has deepened and transformed into a rich tapestry of dark plum, black fruit, chocolate and subtle licorice, with earthy tertiary characters adding a depth and nuance that only genuine bottle age can deliver. The tannins are polished and generous, the finish is long and dry, and the whole thing carries its 15% alcohol with a grace that speaks to the quality of the fruit underneath. Decant for at least an hour before opening - give it room to breathe and watch it unfold into something extraordinary. Fifteen years in. Drinking magnificently right now. Still with road ahead.

Frequently Asked Questions

This 2010 Eduard Shiraz has developed significant complexity over 15 years, with concentrated tannins and layered flavours that need oxygen to fully express themselves. Decanting for at least an hour allows the wine to breathe and opens up the intricate tertiary characters that have developed through bottle ageing. The process also helps integrate the 15% alcohol more seamlessly, revealing the wine's true elegance and allowing you to experience the full spectrum of dark fruit, chocolate, and earthy nuances.

After 15 years of careful cellaring, this wine has undergone a remarkable transformation from its powerful youth into something magnificently complex. The primary fruit flavours have evolved into deeper, more nuanced notes of dark plum and black fruit, while developing sophisticated tertiary characters like chocolate, liquorice, and earthy undertones. The tannins have softened and become more polished, creating a drinking experience that showcases the patience required for premium Barossa Shiraz to reach its full potential.

Kalleske's decision to leave this Shiraz unfined and unfiltered means they've avoided processes that can strip away flavour compounds and texture. This traditional approach preserves the wine's natural character and allows for more complex development during ageing. You might notice some natural sediment in the bottle, which is completely normal and actually indicates the wine's authentic, unmanipulated state - another reason why decanting is particularly beneficial for this style.

While this Eduard Shiraz is drinking magnificently right now at 15 years of age, it still has considerable road ahead for further development. Premium Barossa Shiraz from exceptional vintages like 2010 can continue evolving for decades when properly stored. The wine's structure, balanced acidity, and quality fruit foundation suggest it will continue to develop more complex tertiary flavours over the next 10-15 years, though it's already reached a beautiful drinking window.

The wine's evolved complexity and polished tannins make it perfect for rich, flavourful dishes that can match its intensity without overwhelming its nuanced character. Think slow-cooked lamb with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or game meats where the earthy tertiary notes will complement the protein beautifully. The chocolate and liquorice undertones also pair wonderfully with mature hard cheeses or even dark chocolate desserts, creating harmonious flavour bridges.
