Why do we love this wine?

Open-top fermented, basket pressed the old-fashioned way, and given 18 months in French and American oak to develop the depth and complexity that makes this wine such a consistent favourite. The 2022 vintage gave them exceptional raw material and they've done it full justice. Perfumed and expressive on the nose - dark cherry, dried herbs and a floral lift that draws you in immediately. The palate is bright, rich and generous, with dark fruit and mocha running through soft, velvety tannins to a smooth, satisfying finish that carries the McLaren Vale warmth without ever feeling heavy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Basket pressing is a traditional technique where grapes are gently pressed in wooden baskets rather than modern pneumatic presses. This old-fashioned method extracts juice more slowly and gently, preserving delicate flavours and avoiding harsh tannins that can come from over-extraction. Kay Brothers maintains this labour-intensive approach because it produces wines with greater elegance and complexity, though it requires significantly more time and skill than contemporary methods.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers creates ideal conditions for Shiraz to develop intense fruit concentration while retaining natural acidity. The region's proximity to the ocean provides cooling afternoon breezes that prevent over-ripening, allowing the grapes to maintain freshness alongside the rich, dark fruit flavours. This balance is evident in the 2022 vintage, where you get that characteristic McLaren Vale warmth without the wine feeling heavy or overripe.

Extended oak ageing allows the wine to develop complexity beyond simple fruit flavours, integrating the mocha and spice notes that complement Shiraz's natural dark cherry character. The combination of French and American oak provides different flavour contributions - French oak adds subtle spice and structure, while American oak contributes vanilla and coconut notes. This lengthy maturation also softens the tannins, creating the velvety texture that makes this wine approachable while young yet capable of further cellaring.

The wine's rich, dark fruit flavours and soft tannins make it perfect for grilled red meats, particularly lamb with rosemary or beef with pepper crusts that echo the wine's spicebox notes. The mocha undertones complement dishes with earthy elements like mushroom risotto or aged cheeses. The wine's full body and smooth finish also pair beautifully with slow-cooked dishes like braised short ribs, where the wine's complexity can match the depth of flavour in the food.

While this Shiraz is drinking beautifully now with its approachable tannins and generous fruit, McLaren Vale Shiraz typically develops additional complexity over 8-12 years in proper storage. The 18-month oak treatment and Kay Brothers' traditional winemaking approach suggest this wine has the structure to evolve gracefully, with the dark fruit flavours likely to develop into more savoury, earthy notes while the tannins continue to integrate. Store it in a cool, dark place and it should reward patience with increased complexity.
