Why do we love this wine?

This beauty is a welcome relief in a world where quality Italian nebbiolo often leaves your bank account broken and bare. It’s not Barolo, but it was never meant to be! It’s a delicious nebbiolo from Italy, with bags of character, at a price that means you can actually enjoy drinking it any day of the week. How’s that for a revolutionary concept?

There’s all the acid and tannin you’d expect from the grape, framing a rustic picture of violets, rosehip and sour cherries. In the spirit of the wine, leave your white truffles for the real exxy stuff. This one is happiest with a simple Bolognese or cheese sauce, and poured round the table in hearty glugs. Cin cin!

Frequently Asked Questions

While this Langhe Nebbiolo shares the same noble grape as prestigious Barolo, it comes from a broader appellation that allows for more accessible pricing without sacrificing varietal character. The Langhe designation encompasses vineyards outside the strict Barolo zone, where producers like Massimo Rattalino can craft authentic Nebbiolo expressions that capture the grape's signature tannins and acidity. This approach delivers genuine Piemontese terroir at a fraction of the cost, making it perfect for everyday enjoyment rather than special occasion cellaring.

This medium-bodied Nebbiolo thrives with rustic, comfort-food pairings that complement its earthy, textured profile. The wine's natural acidity and tannin structure make it an ideal match for tomato-based pasta dishes like Bolognese, where the acid cuts through rich meat sauces beautifully. Cheese-based pasta dishes also work wonderfully, as the wine's savoury notes enhance aged Italian cheeses. Serve at cellar temperature (16-18°C) and don't be afraid to pour generously - this is designed for convivial sharing rather than precious sipping.

The 2021 vintage showcases classic Nebbiolo aromatics with a delicate floral bouquet of violets and rose petals, followed by bright cherry fruit on the palate. The wine's textured, savoury style reveals itself through notes of rosehip and sour cherries, creating a rustic yet elegant flavour profile. Nebbiolo's characteristic high acidity and firm tannins provide structure, while the medium body keeps it approachable and food-friendly rather than overwhelmingly powerful.

This Langhe Nebbiolo is crafted for near-term enjoyment and represents excellent value for immediate consumption. While Nebbiolo can age beautifully, this particular style emphasises accessibility and everyday drinking pleasure over long-term cellaring potential. The 2021 vintage is drinking well now, with its tannins already integrated enough for comfortable enjoyment. You could certainly hold it for 2-3 years if desired, but there's no need to wait - it's designed to bring Nebbiolo's charms to your table today.

Massimo Rattalino represents a new generation of Piemontese winemakers focused on making authentic regional wines accessible to everyday wine lovers. The 'Ventisei' (meaning 'twenty-six') in the wine's name likely references a significant vineyard plot or vintage milestone for the producer. This approach reflects a growing movement in Piemonte where talented winemakers are crafting honest, characterful wines outside the premium appellations, proving that exceptional Nebbiolo doesn't always require a premium price tag.
