Why do we love this wine?

New Zealand pinot noir is just about the most luxurious, hard-to-produce wine that’s grown out there. All the way over in Middle Earth, the winemaker Trudy knows just how to unlock the secret, laden with sweet-and-spicy cherry-licious flavours. Complex and layered, we can see why this received a much-deserved 98 points! Expect a wonderful vibrancy, and being from Nelson - the sunniest region in NZ. Generous and full of pinot character and true to its name with an inherent earthy quality that’s downright delightful. Feels like a satin sheet with every sip.

Part of our Women in Wine Collection

We are committed to ALWAYS having wines available that are made by women. In an industry that’s still dominated by men, we believe in celebrating the incredible work women are doing. Here’s to our Women in Wine!

Winemaker: Trudy Sheild

Trudy grew up in the countryside of New Zealand, learning the winemaking ropes in Nelson, before taking on Middle Earth only five years ago. She instantly added her stamp of quality to the wines of this estate, and despite receiving plenty of accolades, she maintains a very down-to-earth attitude all the while creating some of the world’s most exceptional wines

Delightfully charming and elegant with sweet cherry, toasted spice, olive and mushroom notes on the nose, leading to a silky-smooth palate displaying fleshy texture and fine polished tannins. Beautifully ripe and savoury at the same time, offering excellent drinking. At its best: now to 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Nelson is New Zealand's sunniest region, providing optimal conditions for Pinot Noir's notoriously finicky ripening requirements. The abundant sunshine allows the grapes to develop complex flavour compounds while maintaining the natural acidity that gives this wine its wonderful vibrancy. This climate advantage, combined with the region's unique terroir, helps create the earthy quality and cherry-licious flavours that make this wine so distinctive.

A 98-point score from the New Zealand International Wine Show represents near-perfect winemaking, placing this Pinot Noir in the top tier of New Zealand wines. This exceptional rating, combined with a Double Gold Medal, indicates the wine demonstrates outstanding complexity, balance, and varietal character. Such high scores are particularly meaningful for Pinot Noir, as it's one of the most challenging varieties to master due to its thin skin and sensitivity to climate variations.

The wine's blood plum and allspice notes make it perfect for roasted duck with cherry sauce or lamb with herb crusts. The earthy undertones pair beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, while the medium body and elegant style complement salmon or tuna preparations. The wine's satin-like texture and sweet-spicy character also work wonderfully with aged cheeses or charcuterie boards featuring prosciutto and dried fruits.

Pinot Noir is notoriously difficult to cultivate due to its thin skin, making it vulnerable to weather variations and requiring precise timing for harvest. The grape demands specific cool-climate conditions and careful handling throughout the winemaking process to preserve its delicate flavours. This complexity means lower yields and higher production costs, but when done right - as evidenced by this wine's exceptional ratings - the results showcase the grape's unparalleled ability to express terroir and create wines of extraordinary elegance.

Trudy's five-year tenure at Middle Earth has transformed the estate's quality, bringing her Nelson-trained expertise to create wines that balance technical excellence with approachable character. Her down-to-earth philosophy translates into wines that showcase pure fruit expression while maintaining the complex layering that earned this wine its accolades. Her ability to unlock the 'secret' of New Zealand Pinot Noir demonstrates how skilled winemaking can elevate exceptional fruit into world-class wine, contributing to the growing recognition of women's contributions to the wine industry.
