Why do we love this wine?

Over 150 years ago the vines for this wine were planted in the Clare valley. It’s not often you come across vines that old, in fact these were amongst the earliest years of plantings in Australia. Pretty neat, hey? Not only have these vines essentially become one with the terroir in that time, but Kilikanoon crops at super low yields to achieve small, intense berries. You’ll see that immeasurable flavour immediately- beyond anything you’ll get just from age or good winemaking. It’s deep red with crimson hues, and all the prowess to follow through. New and old french oak has given this baby structure and intensity; lifted dark fruits, fresh licorice and compote entertain the palate while the vanilla and light spice do the supporting work behind the scenes. It’s sincere yet subtle, immense yet composed. This will not disappoint you, even for decades to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Attunga 1865 vineyard contains some of Australia's oldest Shiraz vines, planted over 150 years ago during the pioneering era of Australian viticulture. These ancient vines have developed an extraordinary symbiotic relationship with the Clare Valley terroir, their deep root systems accessing unique mineral profiles that younger vines simply cannot reach. The extreme age creates naturally low yields of intensely concentrated fruit, while the vines' survival through decades of varying climatic conditions has selected for exceptional genetic resilience and flavour complexity.

The 2015 vintage is currently in its prime drinking window, showcasing the perfect balance between youthful fruit intensity and developing tertiary complexity. Clare Valley Shiraz from exceptional vintages like 2015 typically peaks between 8-15 years, meaning this wine has several more years of evolution ahead. The combination of old vine concentration, quality French oak integration, and the vintage's natural acidity structure suggests this wine will continue developing savoury, earthy notes while maintaining its core fruit integrity for at least another decade.

The exceptional scoring reflects the rare combination of historical vineyard provenance, masterful winemaking, and an outstanding vintage. Best in Show at the Decanter World Wine Awards means this wine was judged superior to thousands of entries across all categories and price points. The 97-point rating from DWWA recognises not just immediate drinking pleasure, but the wine's structural complexity, regional typicity, and aging potential that sets it apart from standard premium Shiraz offerings.

The wine's rich, full-bodied profile with dark fruit, liquorice, and subtle spice makes it ideal for robust red meat dishes like slow-braised lamb shanks or char-grilled ribeye. The old vine intensity and French oak structure can handle strong flavours like aged hard cheeses, game meats, or dishes with earthy mushrooms and black olives. The wine's natural acidity and tannin structure also complement rich, tomato-based dishes and barbecued meats with smoky, caramelised edges.

Clare Valley's unique combination of ancient soils, elevation variations, and cool climate creates ideal conditions for elegant, age-worthy Shiraz with distinctive regional character. The valley's slate and limestone subsoils contribute to the wine's mineral backbone and natural acidity, while the continental climate with cool nights preserves aromatics and prevents over-ripeness. This terroir expression, amplified by 150-year-old vines, produces the wine's signature combination of power and finesse that distinguishes Clare Valley Shiraz from warmer Australian regions.
