Why do we love this wine?

Reserved for the best! Instantly recognised as grenache by its deep red colour and generous, layered fruit, this Clare Valley sweetheart has stolen our hearts. Using fruit handpicked off old vines from two sites, Kilikanoon has a long history working with these parcels. Their winemaking practises have stayed true to tradition and the wine is as consistent as ever. With a bright body and seductive mouthfeel, this wine has hints of red cherry, blueberry, spiced herb and chalky tannins. What are you waiting for? It’s time to get drinking.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Baudinet Blend showcases the classic GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre) style that originated in France's Rhone Valley but has found exceptional expression in Clare Valley's unique terroir. The use of old vine fruit from two carefully selected sites provides concentrated flavours and complexity that younger vines simply cannot achieve. Kilikanoon's traditional winemaking approach preserves the authentic character of these heritage varietals, creating a wine that balances power with elegance.

Clare Valley's continental climate and ancient soils create ideal conditions for GSM blends, offering warm days for ripening and cool nights that preserve natural acidity. The region's limestone-rich soils contribute to the wine's distinctive chalky tannin structure, while the elevation and aspect of Kilikanoon's vineyard sites enhance flavour concentration. This terroir allows Grenache to develop its characteristic deep red colour and generous fruit profile while maintaining the structural backbone needed for aging.

Serve this full-bodied GSM at 16-18°C to showcase its complex aromatics and smooth mouthfeel. The wine's spiced herb notes and chalky tannins make it an excellent match for Mediterranean cuisine, grilled lamb, or aged hard cheeses. Its bright acidity and fruit-forward character also complement barbecued meats and rustic stews, while the seductive mouthfeel makes it equally enjoyable on its own as a contemplative sipper.

The 90-point score reflects exceptional quality, indicating a wine with outstanding character, complexity, and aging potential that stands well above average releases. Old vine fruit, typically from vines 30+ years old, produces lower yields but dramatically higher quality grapes with concentrated flavours and natural balance. These mature vines have developed deep root systems that access unique mineral profiles in the soil, contributing to the wine's distinctive terroir expression and structural complexity.

This 2018 GSM is beautifully approachable now, showing excellent integration of its fruit, spice, and tannin components after five years of development. However, quality GSM blends from Clare Valley can continue evolving for 8-12 years, developing more complex secondary flavours of leather, earth, and dried herbs. If you enjoy bright, fruit-forward expressions, drink it now; if you prefer more developed, savoury characteristics, consider cellaring for another 2-4 years in proper conditions.
