Why do we love this wine?

Paula and Pablo Pizzella came on a journey from Buenos Aires just to seek a life of cultivating Argentinian malbec. Pretty impressive commitment, and their vineyard represents the same dedicated story. Sitting at around 1000 metres high (yep, grape vines are pretty hardy like that!) the grapes see a long ripening period, meaning fully concentrated flavour bomb. A blend of oak and stainless steel treatment post-fermentation enhances the gift of fruit purity, while ensuring that this wine has that extra level of balance to see it through a long life. It’s all about the density of plum, black cherry and violet now; give this baby a few years and it will no doubt show some graphite and meaty characteristics. This is why Argentinian malbec is really so damn good.

A ripe, spicy malbec here full of fresh blackberries, blueberries, some sweet dark spices, black wood and dark chocolate. Crunchy, fresh and juicy on the medium- to full-bodied palate with firm, supportive and small-grained tannins. Plenty of oak spices in the energetic finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Pizzella vineyard sits at approximately 1000 metres elevation in Mendoza, which creates a unique microclimate for extended ripening periods. This high-altitude terroir allows the grapes to develop intense concentration while retaining natural acidity, resulting in a wine that balances power with elegance. The combination of oak and stainless steel fermentation preserves the fruit purity while adding structural complexity that sets it apart from mass-produced Malbecs.

While delicious now with its vibrant plum and black cherry flavours, this wine is built for evolution over 5-8 years. The high-altitude fruit concentration and careful winemaking provide the tannin structure needed for extended ageing. As it matures, expect the current fruit-forward profile to develop secondary characteristics like graphite minerality and savoury meaty notes, transforming into a more complex and sophisticated expression.

The wine's rich blackberry and chocolate notes with spicy undertones make it perfect for grilled red meats, particularly Argentine-style barbecue or char-grilled steaks. The full body and structured tannins can handle bold flavours like blue cheese, dark chocolate desserts, or hearty stews. The violet aromatics also complement herb-crusted lamb or game meats beautifully.

James Suckling's 92-point rating reflects the wine's exceptional balance between power and finesse, characteristic of high-altitude Mendoza Malbec. The single vineyard designation indicates superior fruit quality and terroir expression, while the concentrated flavours and structural integrity demonstrate serious winemaking. This score places it among the top tier of Argentinian Malbecs, recognising both its immediate appeal and long-term ageing potential.

Paula Pizzella represents the growing influence of women winemakers in Argentina's traditionally male-dominated industry. Her hands-on approach from vineyard management to final blending brings a different perspective to Malbec production, often emphasising elegance and balance alongside power. This recognition highlights not just gender diversity but also the unique winemaking philosophy that contributes to the wine's distinctive character and quality.
