The Right Bank of Bordeaux has always been a treasure trove for great wines at less-than eye watering prices (as opposed to those of the Left Bank which are largely unattainable). This fits that bill and then some - a stand out wine from the greatest wine region there is.

Why do we love this wine?

Merlot dominance of the blend gives up front juiciness, presence, and power on the palate - rich, concentrated fruit compote and ripe dark berries. A bit of cab franc in the blend chimes in and offers some peppy acidity and rigidity to the wine, tying it off quite neatly. As a single piece the wine shows great complexity; liquorice, juniper, fennel, umami, mocha, and that all important Bordeaux cocktail of blackcurrant leaf and cigar box. An enduring fantail finish makes for immensely satisfying drinking. Salut!

"Ripe blueberries, dark chocolate, oyster shell, dried flowers and cedar on the nose. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, sleek tannins. Savory, juicy finish. Very attractive"

Frequently Asked Questions

Saint-Emilion Grand Cru represents the prestigious classification system of Bordeaux's Right Bank, where this wine must meet strict quality standards including lower yields and longer ageing requirements. The Grand Cru designation ensures exceptional terroir expression from Saint-Emilion's limestone and clay soils, which are particularly suited to Merlot cultivation. This classification sits above basic Saint-Emilion but below the coveted Grand Cru Classe level, offering excellent quality-to-price ratio for serious Bordeaux enthusiasts.

The Merlot dominance creates an approachable, fruit-forward profile that's more immediately enjoyable than Cabernet Sauvignon-heavy Left Bank Bordeaux. Merlot's naturally lower tannins and higher sugar content produce the rich fruit compote and dark berry flavours, while the Cabernet Franc addition provides crucial structural backbone and spicy complexity. This blend style is quintessentially Right Bank Bordeaux, offering both power and elegance without the austere tannins that require decades of cellaring.

The 2018 vintage in Bordeaux is celebrated for its ideal growing conditions - a wet winter replenished water reserves, followed by a warm, dry summer that allowed perfect ripening without stress. This created wines with exceptional concentration and balance, avoiding the over-extraction issues of hotter years like 2003 or 2009. The vintage produced wines with both immediate appeal and excellent ageing potential, making 2018 bottles highly sought after by collectors and critics alike.

The wine's rich fruit concentration and earthy complexity make it perfect for robust dishes like slow-braised lamb with herbs, aged beef steaks, or duck confit. The liquorice and umami notes complement mushroom-based dishes beautifully, while the cigar box and blackcurrant leaf characteristics pair excellently with game meats and strong cheeses. The wine's full body and structured tannins can stand up to rich sauces and bold flavours without being overwhelmed.

While this Saint-Emilion Grand Cru is already showing beautifully with its approachable Merlot character, it has the structure to develop for 10-15 years from vintage. The 2018 is currently in its prime drinking window, offering immediate pleasure with its fruit-forward profile, but will continue evolving to show more tertiary complexity like leather, tobacco, and forest floor notes. For optimal enjoyment, decant for 1-2 hours to allow the full-bodied structure to open and reveal its complete aromatic spectrum.
