Wowee. If there was ever a wine that almost overflows with grandeur, this is well and truly it. Aged Barossa shiraz: big, heavy, and bold. Something you can say about the wine and the package it comes in.

Why do we love this wine?

Are we in any doubt anymore that Barossa is the true home of shiraz? Seriously, search the world over and you'll be hard pressed to find juice quite as impressive, quite as complex, and with quite as much history. Each wine that comes out of this prized region is worth holding tightly on to, but this. This right here. This is the stuff mofo. Our producers have been guarding this in their cellar, but they figured it was finally time to send it off to loving homes (ahem, that's us!). Genuinely deep and robust, this wine seems to have a never-ending palate of intrigue. Blackberry and liquorice dance with vanilla and a pantry full of baking spices. Do us a favour and savour every drop, it's worthy of the attention.

Frequently Asked Questions

Barossa Valley's unique terroir, with its warm continental climate and ancient soils, creates ideal conditions for Shiraz to develop exceptional depth and complexity. The region's winemaking heritage spans over 150 years, allowing producers to perfect techniques that bring out Shiraz's natural intensity. This particular 2017 vintage showcases these regional characteristics through its robust structure and layered flavour profile of blackberry, liquorice, and baking spices.

Given its full-bodied structure and impressive 96-point rating from Wine Orbit, this Colonel Shiraz has excellent ageing potential. Barossa Shiraz typically peaks between 8-15 years from vintage, meaning this 2017 is entering its prime drinking window now through 2030. The wine's tannin structure and concentrated fruit will continue to integrate and develop secondary flavours like leather, tobacco, and earthy complexity over the next several years.

The wine's rich blackberry and vanilla notes, combined with its full-bodied weight, make it perfect for hearty red meat dishes like grilled lamb, beef brisket, or aged steaks. The liquorice and baking spice elements also complement game meats, slow-cooked stews, and even dark chocolate desserts. The wine's intensity can stand up to bold flavours and rich sauces without being overwhelmed.

The consistent high scores (95-96 points) reflect the wine's exceptional balance between power and finesse, which is the hallmark of premium Barossa Shiraz. Critics recognise the complexity achieved through careful vineyard management and winemaking, evident in the seamless integration of fruit, oak, and spice elements. The Gold Medal from Wine Showcase Magazine further validates the technical excellence and distinctive character that sets this wine apart from standard regional offerings.

Absolutely - decanting will significantly enhance your experience with this full-bodied Shiraz. Allow 1-2 hours of breathing time to soften the tannins and open up the complex aromatics of blackberry, chocolate, and vanilla. Decanting also helps integrate the baking spice notes and allows the wine's true depth to emerge. Serve at 16-18°C in large Bordeaux-style glasses to maximise the aromatic experience.
