Why do we love this wine?

Are we in any doubt anymore that Barossa is the true home of shiraz? Seriously, search the world over and you'll be hard pressed to find juice quite as impressive, quite as complex, and with quite as much history. Each wine that comes out of this prized region is worth holding tightly on to, but this. This right here. This is the stuff mofo. Our producers have been guarding this in their cellar, but they figured it was finally time to send it off to loving homes (ahem, that's us!). Genuinely deep and robust, this wine seems to have a never-ending palate of intrigue. Blackberry and liquorice dance with vanilla and a pantry full of baking spices. Do us a favour and savour every drop, it's worthy of the attention.

Frequently Asked Questions

Barossa Valley's unique terroir combines warm, dry summers with ancient soils that concentrate flavours beautifully in Shiraz grapes. The region's winemaking heritage spans over 150 years, with many vineyards planted by German settlers who understood how to coax complexity from this variety. This particular 2017 Colonel Shiraz exemplifies why Barossa consistently produces world-class Shiraz - the climate allows for full phenolic ripeness while maintaining natural acidity.

The 2017 vintage in Barossa was exceptional for structure and longevity, producing wines with excellent tannin backbone and concentrated fruit. This Colonel Shiraz demonstrates classic age-worthy characteristics with its full-bodied profile and complex spice integration. The blackberry and liquorice core, supported by vanilla oak, suggests this wine will continue developing secondary flavours like leather, tobacco, and earthy complexity over the next 8-12 years.

Decant this wine 30-60 minutes before serving to allow the robust tannins to soften and the complex aromatics to fully express themselves. Serve at 16-18°C in large Bordeaux-style glasses to concentrate the rich blackberry and spice notes. The wine's intensity and 96-point rating suggest it pairs beautifully with grilled red meats, aged cheeses, or rich stews that can match its powerful flavour profile.

The prominent vanilla and baking spice characteristics indicate careful oak integration, likely from quality French or American barrels aged for 12-18 months. These spices complement rather than overpower the fruit, suggesting the winemaker employed traditional techniques to build complexity. The seamless integration of these flavours with the blackberry and liquorice core demonstrates the producer's skill in balancing fruit concentration with oak influence.

The exceptional scores from Wine Orbit (96pts), Wine Showcase (95pts), and Gold Medal recognition reflect this wine's technical excellence and distinctive character expression. Critics consistently reward Barossa Shiraz that successfully balances power with elegance, and this Colonel Shiraz clearly achieves that harmony. The 4.3 Vivino rating across all vintages also indicates the producer maintains consistent quality year after year, building trust among both critics and consumers.
