"The nose is intense and with typical ripe wild berries such as blackberry and raspberry followed by spicy hints in which the note of liquorice predominates, accompanied by notes of tobacco. It is a full-bodied, austere wine, with succulent tannins and a fresh acidity with a long and expressive finish characterised by blood orange notes in the after taste that temps to drink it." – James Suckling

Why do we love this wine?

We’ve been importing a couple of wines from Tuscan producer Lornano for a few years now. All the buzz from our Mofos made us realise it was time to expand the range. This is Chianti Classico Riserva of the highest order. 100% sangiovese sourced from a vineyard at 330 metres over shale and alluvial soil. After fermentation, it sees about 20 months in French oak, which adds a cedary backdrop to the wine. This is more of a complement to the fruit rather than an overt presence thankfully, as the wine is wonderfully in balance. You’ll find black cherry, plum, licorice, earthen notes and even hints of balsam in the wine. The tannins are velvety and lead into a long mineral-laden finish. Keep the hits coming, Lornano.

Frequently Asked Questions

Chianti Classico Riserva represents the pinnacle of Tuscan winemaking, requiring stricter regulations and longer ageing than standard Chianti. This Lornano expression undergoes 20 months in French oak and must age for a minimum of 24 months total before release. The single vineyard sourcing at 330 metres elevation over shale and alluvial soils creates exceptional terroir expression, while the 100% sangiovese composition showcases the grape's pure character without blending.

The 20-month French oak maturation adds a subtle cedary backbone that complements rather than dominates the fruit expression. French oak is prized for its tight grain and elegant tannin integration, allowing the sangiovese's natural black cherry and plum flavours to shine while gaining complexity. This careful oak treatment creates the wine's velvety tannin structure and contributes to the long, mineral-laden finish that defines quality Chianti Classico.

This wine's robust structure and earthy complexity make it ideal for traditional Tuscan cuisine like wild boar ragu, grilled bistecca alla fiorentina, or aged pecorino cheese. The licorice and balsam notes complement herb-crusted lamb, while the wine's acidity cuts through rich tomato-based dishes. The mineral finish and balanced tannins also pair beautifully with mushroom risotto or truffle-based preparations, echoing the wine's earthy terroir.

While approachable now with its velvety tannins and integrated oak, this 2017 Riserva has excellent cellaring potential due to sangiovese's natural acidity and structure. Chianti Classico Riserva typically peaks between 8-15 years after vintage, meaning this wine should continue developing complexity through 2025-2032. The sustainable farming practices and single vineyard sourcing suggest excellent fruit quality that will reward patient collectors with increased tertiary flavours and seamless integration.

Lornano has earned recognition as both an iconic winery and Mofo favourite through their commitment to sustainable farming and single vineyard expressions that truly reflect terroir. Their focus on 100% sangiovese from specific vineyard sites, rather than blending from multiple sources, creates wines with distinct personality and sense of place. The producer's consistent quality across their range demonstrates mastery of both traditional Tuscan winemaking techniques and modern precision, resulting in wines that honour Chianti Classico's heritage while appealing to contemporary palates.
