Why do we love this wine?

Last year we were lucky enough to get our hands on the Golden Lion RESERVE shiraz from Lou Miranda. We thought it was a rare occasion, but we’ve played our cards right and are ecstatic to bring you the 2018. It’s an equally as excellent wine that feels kinda like welding a jet engine to the back of their regular shiraz. Power and other-worldly levels of deliciousness.

In the glass, the colour is a deep crimson red and there’s lifted aromas of plum, pepper, vanilla and dark chocolate. The palate is full and generous with dark fruits, interwoven spice and savoury tannins. Lou Miranda has included American oak in the ageing regime on this, adding a touch of coconut and further vanilla to the wine. It’s ready to go with a big ole’ steak right now or will happily nap in your cellar for 15 years. This big boy is here for you now and in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Golden Lion Reserve represents Lou Miranda's premium tier, crafted with extended American oak ageing that adds layers of vanilla and coconut complexity. Think of it as their regular Shiraz with a jet engine attached - it delivers significantly more power, concentration, and depth while maintaining the estate's signature Barossa character. The Reserve treatment results in a wine with greater cellaring potential and more sophisticated tannin structure.

This full-bodied Reserve Shiraz has excellent ageing potential of up to 15 years from vintage. The 2018 is drinking beautifully now but will continue developing complexity as the American oak integration softens and the fruit flavours evolve from primary plum and blackberry into more tertiary leather and earthy notes. Proper cellaring conditions will reward patience with a more harmonious and nuanced wine.

This powerful, full-bodied Shiraz demands equally robust companions - think char-grilled steaks, slow-cooked lamb shanks, or rich game meats. The wine's savoury tannins and spice elements complement barbecued meats beautifully, while the vanilla and coconut notes from American oak pair wonderfully with dishes featuring smoky or caramelised flavours. Hard aged cheeses also make excellent partners.

The 96-point Wine Orbit rating and Five Star designation place this Reserve Shiraz in exceptional company among Australian wines. These scores reflect the wine's outstanding balance of power and finesse, typical of premium Barossa Shiraz at its best. The 4.1 Vivino rating across all vintages demonstrates consistent quality from Lou Miranda Estate, while the 'Mofo Fave Producer' status indicates recognition for their winemaking excellence.

American oak brings distinctive vanilla and coconut flavours that complement rather than overwhelm the rich Shiraz fruit. Unlike French oak which tends toward subtle spice, American oak provides more pronounced sweet aromatics that integrate beautifully with the wine's natural plum and dark chocolate notes. This oak treatment also contributes to the wine's full-bodied structure and enhances its ageing potential through gentle tannin integration.
