“Laura Catena is a driving force in the Mendoza wine scene. Here’s her malbec from 50-year old vines that’s super concentrated and complex. The critics (and me of course) absolutely adore it.” – Ben, Wine Buyer

Why do we love this wine?

If you follow the Argentine wine scene at all, you’ll know the name Catena. Laura Catena is the fourth generation of the family to grow malbec and Luca is her artisan brand. So we’re already starting with wine royalty here. Throw in some buzzworthy stats like 50-year old vines and vineyards at over 1000 metres above sea level, and you’re onto something exciting.

Deep in colour and loaded with spice and fruit, this malbec is already drinking well. You’ll find black and red cherries, chocolate and espresso on the palate, along with quite lively acidity and a tannin structure that’ll allow it to age well for a few more years. With a family history as interwoven with malbec as that of the Catena’s, you’d expect nothing less.

Baked blueberries, dark cherries, toasted hazelnuts, vanilla, tea leaves and mocha on the nose. It’s full-bodied with firm, velvety tannins. Creamy and polished. Compact and plush, yet fresh and vibrant at the finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine represents the pinnacle of Argentine malbec heritage, crafted by Laura Catena, fourth-generation member of Argentina's most influential wine family. The 50-year-old vines and high-altitude vineyards above 1000 metres create exceptional concentration and complexity that younger plantings simply cannot achieve. The combination of family legacy, ancient vines, and extreme terroir results in a malbec that showcases why Argentina has become synonymous with this varietal.

Vineyards above 1000 metres in Mendoza experience dramatic temperature swings between scorching days and cool nights, which preserves the wine's natural acidity while allowing full phenolic ripeness. This altitude stress forces the vines to develop deeper root systems and concentrate flavours, resulting in the wine's impressive structure and aging potential. The thin air and intense UV radiation at this elevation also contribute to the deep colour and robust tannin profile that defines premium Argentine malbec.

The wine's rich chocolate and coffee notes make it perfect for grilled red meats, particularly Argentine-style asado or char-grilled steaks with chimichurri. The lively acidity cuts through fatty dishes like braised short ribs or lamb shanks, while the spice elements complement hearty stews and aged cheeses. For a regional pairing, try it with empanadas or locro, traditional Argentine dishes that echo the wine's bold, earthy character.

With its excellent tannin structure and balanced acidity, this malbec has the backbone to develop beautifully over the next 5-8 years. The old vine fruit provides natural concentration that will evolve from its current black cherry and chocolate profile into more complex tertiary flavours of leather, tobacco, and dried herbs. While drinking beautifully now, patience will be rewarded as the wine's components integrate and soften, revealing the true potential of these ancient vines.

Vines over 50 years old have established extensive root systems that reach deep into the soil, accessing minerals and water sources unavailable to younger plants. These mature vines naturally self-regulate their yield, producing fewer but more concentrated grapes with intense flavour compounds. Old vines also develop resistance to environmental stresses and diseases, creating fruit with greater complexity and depth that translates directly into wines with superior structure, longevity, and distinctive terroir expression.
