A dense, gutsy, fruit-driven wine with prominent oak and dusty, lingering tannins. 8 years aging has brought a roundness to the wine whilst leaving the fruit virtually untouched. Dangerously drinkable right now but chuck a couple in the cellar too, just in case.

Why do we love this wine?

Classic Coonawarra - cassis, blackcurrant and dark plums rule the fruit profile whilst the regional characters of eucalypt and allspice pick up the slack. As soon as this wine hits the glass, it's unmistakably Coonawarra, unashamedly bold and unsurprisingly vibrant. 18 months in a mix of French and American barrels brings a complexity to the oak profile and fullness that will leave this wine in seriously good nick for as long your patience lasts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soil over limestone creates ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, producing wines with intense cassis and blackcurrant flavours alongside distinctive eucalyptus and spice notes. This 2017 Glenroy exemplifies the region's signature style - bold, vibrant, and unmistakably Australian. The cool climate and unique terroir allow for extended ripening, developing complex fruit characters while maintaining excellent natural acidity.

With 18 months of French and American oak maturation and Coonawarra's renowned aging potential, this wine is built for the long haul. The 2017 vintage is drinking beautifully now but will continue developing complexity for another 10-15 years. Cabernet Sauvignon from premium Coonawarra sites like Glenroy typically peak between 8-12 years, with the best examples remaining vibrant for two decades or more.

The wine's rich cassis and dark plum flavours, combined with eucalyptus and allspice notes, make it perfect for robust dishes. Think grilled lamb with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or hearty game meats where the wine's tannin structure can complement the protein's richness. The oak complexity also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes or aged hard cheeses like vintage cheddar.

The 96-point Wine Orbit and 95-point Wine Pilot scores reflect this wine's exceptional balance of power and finesse. Premium Coonawarra fruit combined with skilled oak handling creates layers of complexity that critics love - the immediate fruit impact, regional character expression, and long-term aging potential. These scores place it among Australia's elite Cabernet Sauvignons, representing outstanding value for such quality.

Using both French and American oak creates a more complex flavour profile than either wood type alone. French oak contributes subtle spice, vanilla, and structural tannins, while American oak adds coconut, dill, and sweeter vanilla notes. This 18-month maturation period allows the wine to integrate these different oak characters seamlessly, adding fullness and complexity without overwhelming the distinctive Coonawarra fruit expression.
