Majella are one of those producers who simply don't miss. Vintage after vintage, the wines are honest, well-crafted and deeply satisfying - and this shiraz is a perfect example of everything they do well. Approachable on the surface. Serious underneath. The best kind of shiraz.

Why do we love this wine?

Deep ruby in the glass, with redcurrant, sweet spice, mint and creamy vanillin oak on the nose - attractive and completely inviting from the very first sniff. The palate is lush and generous, with juicy plum and cherry fruit, a bright freshening acidity and firm, dry tannins that give it real structure and staying power underneath all that approachable fruit. Drink it now or cellar it for up to a decade. Either way, this is a genuinely well-made red from a producer with an outstanding reputation and the track record to back it up. At this price, stocking up is the obvious move.

Frequently Asked Questions

Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soil over limestone creates ideal drainage and mineral complexity that gives Shiraz a distinctive elegance and structure. This cool-climate region produces Shiraz with brighter acidity and more refined tannins compared to warmer areas like Barossa Valley, resulting in wines that balance power with finesse. The 2020 Majella exemplifies this regional character with its firm, dry tannins and bright freshening acidity that provides excellent ageing potential.

This Shiraz can be enjoyed immediately or cellared for up to a decade, with the wine evolving significantly over time. Initially, the juicy plum and cherry fruit dominates, but with age the creamy vanillin oak will integrate further and secondary flavours like leather, tobacco, and earthy complexity will develop. The firm tannins will soften gradually, creating a more seamless texture while maintaining the wine's structural backbone.

The rich, full-bodied nature and spicebox characteristics make this Shiraz perfect for robust dishes like grilled lamb with rosemary, beef brisket, or aged hard cheeses. The wine's bright acidity cuts through rich, fatty meats while the firm tannins complement protein beautifully. For vegetarian options, try it with mushroom-based dishes or roasted eggplant with herbs that echo the wine's mint and spice notes.

Majella has built an outstanding reputation in Coonawarra since the 1960s, consistently producing wines that showcase the region's unique terroir with exceptional quality-to-price ratios. Their focus on traditional winemaking techniques combined with modern precision has earned them recognition as one of Australia's most reliable producers. The family-owned estate's commitment to expressing Coonawarra's character rather than following trends has created a loyal following among both critics and consumers.

The combination of blackberry and blood plum indicates a wine made from fully ripe fruit with excellent concentration and natural sweetness. These dark fruit flavours, combined with the spicebox notes, suggest the wine underwent careful extraction to balance power with elegance. The blood plum character particularly indicates the cool-climate influence of Coonawarra, where fruit ripens slowly and develops complex flavour compounds while retaining natural acidity.
