The Malleea only gets made when conditions are good enough. Since 1996, that's meant a select handful of vintages earning the right to carry this label. The 2022 is one of them. Majella are one of Coonawarra's most celebrated family producers - and this is their absolute best. 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Shiraz, 19 months in new French oak hogsheads, and a vintage that the region is already talking about with genuine excitement.

Why do we love this wine?

Deep purple in the glass, with a nose that layers fruitcake, cassis, dark chocolate, smoked meat and dried herbs into something seriously compelling. The palate is full-bodied, dense and beautifully balanced - ripe and generous without ever losing its elegance, with satiny tannins and a finish that maintains intensity all the way to the end. Already drinking magnificently. Built to evolve for another decade and a half without breaking a sweat. This is the classic Australian red blend done at the highest possible level. From a Coonawarra institution. In a vintage that delivered everything. Cellar it. Or open it tonight with something meaty alongside it. Both are excellent decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine represents the pinnacle of Australian red blending, combining Cabernet Sauvignon's structure with Shiraz's power in perfect harmony. The 96-point Wine Pilot rating reflects exceptional winemaking from Majella, a Coonawarra institution with decades of expertise. The 2022 vintage delivered ideal conditions, resulting in a wine that balances ripe generosity with elegant restraint - a hallmark of truly great Australian reds.

This wine is built for the long haul, with the structure to evolve gracefully for another 15 years without breaking a sweat. While it's already drinking magnificently now, the dense tannins and concentrated fruit will continue developing complexity through the 2030s. Coonawarra's terra rossa soil imparts natural acidity and tannin structure that allows wines like this to age beautifully, developing secondary flavours of leather, tobacco, and earth.

The wine's full-bodied nature and satiny tannins make it perfect for rich, meaty dishes that can stand up to its intensity. Think slow-cooked lamb shanks, grilled ribeye, or aged hard cheeses. The dark chocolate and smoked meat notes in the wine create natural bridges with barbecued or roasted proteins, while the underlying cassis and herb complexity complements Mediterranean-style preparations with rosemary and garlic.

Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soil - a thin layer of red earth over limestone - provides exceptional drainage while retaining moisture, creating perfect conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The cool maritime climate extends the growing season, allowing grapes to develop intense flavours while maintaining natural acidity. This unique terroir produces wines with the structure and elegance that have made Coonawarra Australia's premier region for premium Cabernet blends.

These complex aromatics indicate a wine made from perfectly ripe grapes with extended skin contact and careful oak integration. The fruitcake notes suggest concentrated dark fruits with spice complexity, while dried herbs reflect the wine's savoury character - a signature of quality Coonawarra reds. This flavour profile demonstrates the wine's ability to balance fruit richness with earthy, savoury elements that develop further with age.
