This Barolo Gramolere has been crafted since 1971, with Manzone Giovanni maintaining traditional methods that prioritise patient winemaking over quick profits. From a single south-southwest facing vineyard in Monforte d'Alba where 35 year old vines cling to steep slopes demanding hand work - and hard work it receives! This wine is a labour of love, and gee you can feel the love.

Why do we love this wine?

The vineyard sits on south-southwest facing slopes so steep that everything must be done manually - no machinery, just human hands and backs. 35 year old vines dig into calcareous sandy soil loaded with stones and fossils, creating the mineral backbone that defines this wine's character. Bright ruby red with subtle rim brightening signals developing complexity. The nose reveals roses (classic), fine oak and milk chocolate alongside grippy earthy tannins with cranberry brightness. Resinous tones frame the palate before slightly dusty tannins emerge on the finish - classic Barolo structure showing its personality. We're certainly feeling the love, now it's your turn.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Gramolere vineyard sits on incredibly steep south-southwest facing slopes where machinery simply cannot operate safely or effectively. This manual harvesting, while labour-intensive, allows for selective picking of only the finest Nebbiolo grapes at optimal ripeness. The challenging terrain actually contributes to the wine's quality - the steep gradient provides excellent drainage and sun exposure, concentrating flavours in the grapes that become this wine's distinctive mineral backbone.

The 35-year-old vines grow in calcareous sandy soil rich with stones and ancient fossils, creating the mineral foundation that Barolo is renowned for. This unique geological composition, formed over millions of years, provides excellent drainage while the limestone elements contribute to the wine's structured tannins and longevity. The fossils and stones force the vine roots to dig deeper, accessing different soil layers and creating the complex mineral notes that distinguish great Barolo from ordinary red wines.

While this 2020 Barolo is already showing beautiful development with its bright ruby colour and emerging complexity, Nebbiolo-based wines like this typically benefit from 5-10 years of cellaring to fully integrate their grippy tannins. The dusty tannins on the finish indicate the wine is still in its youth and will continue evolving, developing more tertiary flavours of leather, earth, and dried roses. However, if you're curious about its current expression, decanting for 2-3 hours will help soften those robust tannins.

This wine's earthy, tarry character and robust tannin structure make it perfect for rich, slow-cooked dishes that can match its intensity. Think braised beef short ribs, wild boar ragu, or aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano or Gorgonzola. The wine's cranberry brightness and resinous notes also complement game meats beautifully, while its mineral backbone pairs excellently with truffle dishes - a classic Piemontese combination that highlights both the wine's terroir and regional culinary traditions.

DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) represents Italy's highest quality classification, guaranteeing this wine meets strict production standards specific to the Barolo region. Every bottle is government-tested and approved, ensuring it's made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes grown within designated Barolo communes using traditional methods. This designation also means the wine must age for a minimum period before release, though this 2020 vintage from Manzone Giovanni exceeds those requirements, reflecting the producer's commitment to quality over speed to market.
