97 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. From bush vines planted in 1858. From one of Barossa's most historically significant sites. This is not a wine that needs much selling. It just needs to be in your glass.

Why do we love this wine?

Erin Larkin at Wine Advocate called it "so good" with "such endurance of flavour in the mouth that I can still taste it after having written the note." Pink peppercorn, raspberry, salted liquorice, black cherry and cocoa powder - a complexity that genuinely defies description. The winemaking is equally meticulous - two separate parcels handled completely differently, then brought together into something seamless, fine-boned and built to evolve for a decade or more. Massena are one of the Barossa's most quietly revered small producers - no American oak, indigenous yeasts, basket pressing, dry-farmed old vines. Everything done the right way for the right reasons. And the Stonegarden vineyard is their crown jewel - ancient loam over rose quartz and black mica schist, once part of a sea bed, producing fruit of extraordinary minerality and aromatic complexity.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Eden Valley Grenache showcases a completely different terroir profile than the warmer Barossa Valley floor. The ancient loam over rose quartz and black mica schist creates extraordinary minerality that you simply can't achieve in heavier clay soils. Massena's commitment to indigenous yeasts and no American oak allows the unique geological fingerprint to shine through, resulting in a wine with remarkable aromatic complexity and fine-boned structure rather than the power-driven style often associated with the region.

This wine is built for serious cellaring with a decade or more of evolution ahead. The meticulous two-parcel winemaking approach and old vine fruit create the structural backbone needed for long-term ageing. While drinking beautifully now, the complex flavour profile of pink peppercorn, raspberry, and cocoa will integrate and develop tertiary characteristics over 8-12 years. The high acidity and fine tannin structure typical of Eden Valley Grenache ensures graceful development rather than rapid decline.

The 97-point score reflects the wine's exceptional complexity and seamless integration of contrasting elements. Erin Larkin's tasting note specifically praised the 'endurance of flavour' - a hallmark of truly great wines where the finish seems to last indefinitely. The combination of Massena's old-world winemaking techniques with fruit from their crown jewel vineyard creates a wine that defies easy categorisation, showing both power and finesse in perfect balance.

The wine's full-bodied nature and complex flavour profile of black cherry, dark chocolate, and white pepper makes it ideal for rich, slow-cooked dishes. Think braised lamb shanks with rosemary, duck confit, or aged beef with mushroom ragout. The minerality from the unique schist soils also pairs beautifully with game meats and earthy dishes featuring truffles or wild mushrooms, while the wine's natural acidity cuts through rich, fatty preparations.

Basket pressing is a traditional, gentle extraction method that preserves the delicate aromatics and fine tannin structure evident in this wine. Unlike modern pneumatic presses, basket pressing applies gradual, even pressure that extracts colour and flavour without harsh tannins or bitter compounds. This technique is particularly important for Grenache, which can become overly extracted and lose its characteristic elegance, explaining why this wine shows such remarkable finesse despite its full-bodied nature.
