The two winemakers here are Dan Standish and Jaysen Collins - two school mates who between them have Torbreck and Turkey Flat pedigree - and together they've built Massena into one of the Barossa's most quietly exciting operations. This is an example of what real regional expertise looks like.

Why do we love this wine?

The sixty-year-old Greenock Shiraz vines that form the backbone of this wine were days away from being ripped out of the ground. Low yields, not enough commercial interest, bulldozer on standby. It took repeated requests and some very persistent winemakers to stop the machinery and save what turned out to be something extraordinary. What ends up in the bottle is impenetrable, opaque and completely commanding. Black cherry, liquorice and dark plum on the nose, with dried herb, cedar and black pepper adding layers of complexity that just keep unfolding. The palate is rich, lavish and full-bodied - succulent dark fruit, dark chocolate, earth and fennel rolling across velvety tannins to a long, deeply satisfying finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine comes from sixty-year-old Greenock vines that were literally saved from bulldozers at the last moment - hence 'The Eleventh Hour' name. Old vines like these produce incredibly concentrated fruit with complex flavour development that younger plantings simply cannot match. The low yields from these mature vines create wines with exceptional depth and character that exemplify why Barossa is considered one of the world's premier Shiraz regions.

Serve this wine at cellar temperature (16-18°C) to allow its complex aromatics to fully express themselves. The rich, velvety tannins and dark fruit profile make it perfect for grilled red meats, slow-cooked lamb, or aged hard cheeses. Consider decanting for 30-60 minutes before serving to help integrate the powerful tannins and unlock the wine's layered complexity of cedar, black pepper, and dark chocolate notes.

A 4.0 Vivino rating places this wine in the 'very good to excellent' category, representing the top 15% of wines on the platform. This rating reflects consistent quality across multiple vintages and indicates that wine enthusiasts consistently find exceptional value and enjoyment. Combined with its 'Boutique Producer' and 'Staff Picks' designations, this suggests Massena delivers artisanal quality that punches well above typical commercial Shiraz offerings.

While this 2020 Shiraz is approachable now with its rich, succulent fruit character, its full-bodied structure and velvety tannins suggest excellent cellaring potential. Barossa Shiraz from quality producers like Massena typically develops beautifully over 8-15 years, with the primary dark fruit evolving into more complex secondary flavours of leather, tobacco, and spice. You can enjoy it immediately or cellar until 2030-2035 for optimal development.

Expect an intensely concentrated wine with layers of black cherry, liquorice, and dark plum dominating the nose, while the palate delivers rich dark chocolate, blackberry, and blood plum flavours. The complexity builds with dried herbs, cedar, black pepper, earth, and fennel notes that continue to unfold as the wine breathes. This flavour intensity is characteristic of old-vine Barossa Shiraz, where decades of root development create extraordinary fruit concentration and terroir expression.
