Why do we love this wine?

This beauty is a welcome relief in a world where quality Italian nebbiolo often leaves your bank account broken and bare. It’s not Barolo, but it was never meant to be! It’s a delicious nebbiolo from Italy, with bags of character, at a price that means you can actually enjoy drinking it any day of the week. How’s that for a revolutionary concept?

There’s all the acid and tannin you’d expect from the grape, framing a rustic picture of violets, rosehip and sour cherries. In the spirit of the wine, leave your white truffles for the real exxy stuff. This one is happiest with a simple Bolognese or cheese sauce, and poured round the table in hearty glugs. Cin cin!

Frequently Asked Questions

This Langhe Nebbiolo offers the classic characteristics of the noble Nebbiolo grape - high acidity, firm tannins, and elegant floral notes - without the premium price tag of its famous Barolo cousin. While Barolo requires specific vineyard sites and longer ageing, this Langhe expression captures Nebbiolo's essence in a more approachable style that you can enjoy regularly rather than saving for special occasions.

Serve this medium-bodied Nebbiolo slightly below room temperature (around 16-18°C) to highlight its violet and cherry aromatics while maintaining the wine's structural integrity. The wine's rustic character and moderate tannins make it perfect for casual dining - decant it 30 minutes before serving to allow the flavours to open up, especially those distinctive rose petal and sour cherry notes.

This Nebbiolo's bright acidity and savoury tannins make it an ideal match for tomato-based pasta dishes like Bolognese, where the wine's structure complements rich meat sauces beautifully. The wine's rustic character also pairs wonderfully with aged cheeses, mushroom risottos, and herb-crusted roasted meats, reflecting the traditional Piemontese cuisine where Nebbiolo originated.

The 2021 vintage is drinking beautifully now, showcasing vibrant cherry and violet characteristics that make Nebbiolo so appealing in its youth. While this style is designed for earlier consumption than premium Barolo, it has enough structure to develop additional complexity over the next 3-5 years, allowing the tannins to soften and secondary flavours to emerge.

Ventisei means 'twenty-six' in Italian, likely referencing a specific vineyard plot, vintage milestone, or personal significance to producer Massimo Rattalino. This naming reflects the intimate, artisanal approach common among smaller Piemonte producers who often create wines that tell personal stories, contrasting with the more commercial approach of larger operations while maintaining the region's winemaking traditions.
