Why do we love this wine?

If you needed to explain what McLaren Vale shiraz tastes like to someone who had never tried it before, you'd open up a bottle of this beauty. Completely classic in every way. Dark and inky in colour, the nose displays its fruit remarkably well and a complex palate of blood plums, dark chocolate, liquorice and blueberry build to a vanillan oak and peppery spice driven finish. In the words of Jane Faulkner of Halliday Wine Companion, "Full-bodied, solid tannins and a bit of a thumper". This is drinking at its best from now until 2030 (give or take) so it's very much in the perfect window to get stuck into now!

Halliday Wine Companion

Halliday Wine Companion

New oak is low here, around 5% (French and American), but there’s likely some more recent fills, with some walnut/hazelnut husk and vanillin notes and structuring, woody grip. This is always the generous but not too overt Maxwell shiraz, offering dark fruit, some rum and raisin spice notes, hints of dark chocolate and anise. So too, here. There’s also a little ferrous minerality, adding savoury detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

McLaren Vale shiraz is renowned for its distinctive Mediterranean climate and diverse soil types, which produce wines with exceptional concentration and complexity. The region's proximity to the ocean moderates temperatures, allowing for extended ripening periods that develop the rich, dark fruit flavours and chocolate notes found in this Silver Hammer. Unlike the cooler climate elegance of Adelaide Hills or the power of Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale strikes a perfect balance between intensity and finesse, making it the benchmark style for Australian shiraz.

This 2022 vintage is currently in its prime drinking window and will continue to evolve beautifully until around 2030. The wine's solid tannin structure and full-bodied nature mean it will develop greater complexity over the next few years, with the vanillan oak integrating further and the fruit flavours becoming more nuanced. However, it's perfectly enjoyable now if you prefer the vibrant, youthful expression of the dark plum and blueberry characteristics.

The wine's robust tannins and rich flavour profile make it an excellent match for hearty, protein-rich dishes. Think grilled lamb with rosemary, beef brisket, or aged hard cheeses where the wine's peppery spice and dark chocolate notes can complement the food's richness. The liquorice and plum characteristics also pair beautifully with game meats or even dark chocolate desserts, creating harmonious flavour bridges between the wine and food.

Receiving consistent 90-point scores from respected critics like Halliday Wine Companion, plus earning both Five Star Winery status and a Special Value Award, indicates exceptional quality-to-price ratio. These ratings suggest the wine demonstrates textbook McLaren Vale characteristics while offering outstanding value. The Halliday Special Value Award is particularly significant, as it recognises wines that punch well above their price point in terms of quality and craftsmanship.

This wine embodies all the hallmark characteristics that define McLaren Vale shiraz - the dark, inky colour, complex aromatics, and the perfect balance of rich fruit with savoury elements. The combination of blood plums and dark chocolate with liquorice complexity, finishing with vanillan oak and peppery spice, represents the archetypal flavour profile that has made this region famous. It's the kind of wine that serves as a textbook example of what makes McLaren Vale shiraz so distinctive and sought-after globally.
