Why do we love this wine?

New Zealand pinot noir is just about the most luxurious, hard-to-produce wine that’s grown out there. All the way over in Middle Earth, the winemaker Trudy knows just how to unlock the secret, laden with sweet-and-spicy cherry-licious flavours. Complex and layered, we can see why this received a much-deserved 98 points! Expect a wonderful vibrancy, and being from Nelson - the sunniest region in NZ. Generous and full of pinot character and true to its name with an inherent earthy quality that’s downright delightful. Feels like a satin sheet with every sip.

Part of our Women in Wine Collection

We are committed to ALWAYS having wines available that are made by women. In an industry that’s still dominated by men, we believe in celebrating the incredible work women are doing. Here’s to our Women in Wine!

Winemaker: Trudy Sheild

Trudy grew up in the countryside of New Zealand, learning the winemaking ropes in Nelson, before taking on Middle Earth only five years ago. She instantly added her stamp of quality to the wines of this estate, and despite receiving plenty of accolades, she maintains a very down-to-earth attitude all the while creating some of the world’s most exceptional wines

Delightfully charming and elegant with sweet cherry, toasted spice, olive and mushroom notes on the nose, leading to a silky-smooth palate displaying fleshy texture and fine polished tannins. Beautifully ripe and savoury at the same time, offering excellent drinking. At its best: now to 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Nelson is New Zealand's sunniest region, providing optimal conditions for Pinot Noir's notoriously finicky ripening requirements. The abundant sunshine allows the grapes to develop complex flavour compounds while maintaining the variety's signature elegance. This climate, combined with Nelson's unique terroir, enables winemakers like Trudy to craft wines with both power and finesse. The region's reputation for producing world-class Pinot Noir is well-established among wine enthusiasts globally.

A 98-point score from the New Zealand International Wine Show represents exceptional achievement, placing this wine in the top tier of New Zealand Pinot Noirs. Scores above 95 points are reserved for truly outstanding wines that demonstrate perfect balance, complexity, and regional character. The additional Double Gold Medal and Five Stars rating further validate this wine's exceptional quality. Such recognition indicates this Pinot Noir stands among New Zealand's finest examples of the variety.

The wine's sweet-and-spicy cherry flavours and earthy undertones make it incredibly versatile with food. Classic pairings include roasted duck, lamb with herbs, or wild mushroom risotto that complement its earthy character. The medium body and elegant style also work beautifully with salmon, tuna, or even hearty vegetarian dishes. The allspice and blood plum notes provide enough complexity to enhance both rustic and refined cuisine.

Pinot Noir is notoriously difficult because it's extremely sensitive to climate, soil, and winemaking decisions. The thin-skinned grapes require precise timing for harvest and gentle handling to preserve their delicate flavours. Temperature fluctuations during fermentation can dramatically alter the wine's character, demanding constant attention from skilled winemakers. This complexity explains why exceptional examples like this Middle Earth wine, crafted by experienced winemaker Trudy, command such respect and high ratings.

The 'satin sheet' description indicates this Pinot Noir has achieved the variety's hallmark silky, luxurious mouthfeel that distinguishes premium examples. This texture results from careful extraction during winemaking, preserving the grape's natural elegance while building complexity. Such smoothness suggests well-integrated tannins and balanced acidity, creating a wine that feels refined rather than aggressive. This textural quality is particularly prized in Pinot Noir and indicates masterful winemaking technique.
