Why do we love this wine?

Mitolo is a true icon of Australian wine, famous for bold, firm and concentrated reds that are truly some of the best in the region.

This 2018 shiraz starts with blueberries and plums on the nose, followed by a pretty perfume. The palate is all McLaren with dense red and black fruit, richness and abundant tannin. It’s as intense, as complex, as high quality, as powerful as you are going to find, with all of that fruit supported by roasted nuts and spices, and super dark chocolate. The mouthfeel is indeed bold, but not overwhelming, as tannin dances with fruit, acidity, earthy notes and a long and moreish finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create ideal conditions for shiraz, producing wines with intense concentration and bold character. This Mitolo 2018 exemplifies the region's signature style with its dense red and black fruit profile, abundant tannins, and complex earthy undertones. The warm climate allows for full phenolic ripeness, resulting in the rich, full-bodied structure that McLaren Vale shiraz is renowned for worldwide.

With its impressive 96-point Wine Orbit rating and full-bodied structure, this Mitolo shiraz has excellent ageing potential of 10-15 years from vintage. The abundant tannins and concentrated fruit will gradually integrate and soften, while developing secondary flavours of leather, tobacco, and dried herbs. The wine's current intensity suggests it will reward patient cellaring, though it's already drinking beautifully now.

This full-bodied shiraz demands equally robust flavours - think slow-cooked lamb shanks, grilled ribeye steak, or rich game meats like venison. The wine's roasted nut and dark chocolate notes make it perfect with aged hard cheeses or dark chocolate desserts. Its bold tannin structure can handle spicy cuisines too, particularly barbecued meats with smoky, peppery rubs that complement the wine's natural spice elements.

Mitolo has earned its reputation through consistent production of concentrated, terroir-driven wines that showcase McLaren Vale's potential. Their Five Star Halliday winery rating reflects decades of winemaking excellence and innovation in expressing shiraz's full potential. The producer's focus on bold, firm reds has helped define the modern Australian shiraz style, making them a benchmark for quality and consistency in the region.

Vegan-friendly wines avoid animal-derived fining agents traditionally used for clarification, such as egg whites, isinglass, or gelatin. Instead, winemakers use plant-based or mineral alternatives like bentonite clay or activated charcoal to achieve clarity. This Mitolo shiraz maintains its exceptional quality and complex flavour profile while meeting vegan standards, proving that ethical winemaking doesn't compromise on taste or structure.
