When a vintage as celebrated as 2018 sets the bar sky-high, the follow-up has a lot to prove. This 2019 release doesn’t just meet expectations - it SMASHES them. Sourced from two exceptional Clare Valley sites - the cool, mineral-rich Polish Hill River and the warmer, more robust Armagh district - this wine captures the perfect balance of purity and power. It spent two years in French oak, allowing its structure and texture to knit together in perfect harmony.

Why do we love this wine?

In the glass, it’s an inky, impenetrable beauty - deep crimson edges framing a core of midnight black. The aromatics are intoxicating: blackberry and black cherry laced with liquorice, fennel, black olive, and an appropriate lick of cedar and spice. On the palate, it’s plush yet composed - layers of dark plum, mocha, and subtle pepper rolling over fine-grained tannins that bring both gravity and grace. This is Clare Valley craftsmanship at its peak: powerful without excess, refined without restraint. Built for long-term cellaring, though utterly compelling even now. For collectors, this is the kind of wine that disappears quietly into cellars and only re-emerges years later - more complex, more commanding, and even harder to find. For impatient folks like us, it ends up in the glass next to anything salty and fatty.

Frequently Asked Questions

While Clare Valley is renowned for its elegant Rieslings, this Armagh Shiraz showcases the region's exceptional ability to produce powerful, age-worthy reds. The unique terroir combines warm days with cool nights, allowing the Shiraz grapes to develop intense concentration while retaining natural acidity. This creates the wine's signature balance of power and refinement that sets it apart from the more rustic styles found in warmer Australian regions.

This 2019 Armagh Shiraz is built for serious cellaring, with the structure to evolve beautifully over 15-20 years. The fine-grained tannins and concentrated fruit will gradually integrate, developing complex tertiary flavours like leather, tobacco, and earthy undertones. While it's drinking well now, patience will be rewarded as the wine reaches its peak around 2030-2035, when the initial fruit intensity mellows into sophisticated complexity.

The wine's rich, plush character and spicy notes make it perfect for robust dishes that can match its intensity. Think slow-cooked lamb shanks, grilled ribeye with peppercorn sauce, or aged hard cheeses. The blackberry and mocha flavours also complement game meats like venison or duck, while the wine's natural acidity cuts through fatty dishes beautifully, making it ideal for anything 'salty and fatty' as the description suggests.

The dual 95-point scores from both Real Review and Ray Jordan reflect this wine's exceptional quality and typicity for premium Clare Valley Shiraz. These high ratings indicate perfect balance between power and elegance, outstanding varietal expression, and excellent ageing potential. Such consistent scoring from different critics suggests the wine successfully captures the essence of its terroir while demonstrating the winemaking expertise that O'Leary Walker is known for.

The deep, opaque colour indicates serious extraction and concentration during winemaking, suggesting extended maceration on skins to draw out maximum colour, tannins, and flavour compounds. This visual intensity typically correlates with full-bodied wines that have excellent ageing potential. The 'midnight black core with crimson edges' is characteristic of premium Shiraz made from perfectly ripe grapes, indicating both power and elegance in the final wine.
