Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Monsieur Lesec is a jovial chap, slightly portly and upbeat. He’s about the living embodiment of joie de vivre, and has somehow imbued that spirit into his plump, satisfying Châteauneuf. Sensationally concentrated and rich, the amount of flavour he’s packed into one delicious bottle is stunning. Ripe cherries and berries, tangy licorice, tobacco and spice – it’s all there. The cellar potential is ludicrous, but they’re drinking beautifully already so don't hesitate to get stuck in.

I always love this cuvée from Lesec, and the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Galets Blonds looks to be another fine effort. Pretty red currants, blackberries, bouquet garni, and candied violet notes give way to a medium to full-bodied, elegant Châteauneuf du Pape that has a terrific sense of freshness, ripe yet present tannins, and a great finish. It’s well worth seeking out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Patrick Lesec's approach focuses on extracting maximum concentration and richness from the famous galets roulés (rounded stones) that give this cuvée its name. The Galets Blonds refers to the blonde-coloured stones that absorb heat during the day and release it at night, creating ideal ripening conditions. This terroir-driven winemaking results in a wine that captures the essence of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's unique geology while showcasing Lesec's talent for crafting wines with immediate appeal and long-term cellaring potential.

With its exceptional concentration and full-bodied structure, this wine has remarkable aging potential spanning 15-20 years or more. The 2019 vintage benefits from excellent growing conditions in the Southern Rhône, providing the backbone necessary for extended cellaring. While it's drinking beautifully now with its rich fruit expression, the wine will develop greater complexity over time, with the cherry and berry flavours evolving into more savoury notes of leather, earth, and dried herbs.

GSM stands for Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre - the classic trio of grape varieties that form the backbone of Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines. Grenache provides the wine's generous fruit character and alcohol warmth, Syrah contributes structure and spicy complexity, while Mourvèdre adds tannic backbone and earthy depth. This traditional blend creates the perfect balance between power and elegance, allowing each variety to complement the others while expressing the unique terroir of the appellation.

The wine's rich concentration and complex flavour profile make it ideal for hearty, flavourful dishes that can match its intensity. Think slow-braised lamb with herbs de Provence, grilled ribeye with rosemary, or aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. The tobacco and spice notes also complement game meats beautifully, while the wine's natural acidity cuts through rich, sauce-based dishes like coq au vin or beef bourguignon.

The 94-point score from Jeb Dunnuck reflects the wine's exceptional balance between power and finesse, showcasing Patrick Lesec's skill in crafting wines that are both immediately appealing and built for the long haul. Critics particularly praise the wine's remarkable concentration without heaviness, and its ability to express classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape character while maintaining elegance. The combination of ripe fruit, well-integrated tannins, and complex secondary flavours demonstrates why this producer has earned recognition as a standout in this prestigious appellation.
