Why do we love this wine?

Les Maladiéres is Pierre Naigeon's Bourgogne Rouge. But don't be fooled by the classification. There's only 200 cases made of this and it's given the full Rolls Royce treatment. Sourced from old vines located along the Chambolle Musigny appallation, it's handpicked, handsorted, naturally fermented and given nine months on fine lees in French oak. The wine is then bottled unfined and unfiltered, preserving the incredible texture and depth. We're talking cherry, earth, slate, truffle, tobacco and licorice. If you love Burgundy and love a good deal, this is the rare intersection of that Venn Diagram.

Frequently Asked Questions

Despite carrying the humble Bourgogne Rouge classification, this wine receives premium treatment typically reserved for higher appellations. With only 200 cases produced from old vines near Chambolle-Musigny, it's handpicked, naturally fermented, and aged nine months on fine lees in French oak. The unfined and unfiltered bottling preserves exceptional texture and complexity that rivals many village-level Burgundies at a fraction of the price.

The 2017 vintage in Burgundy was marked by challenging weather that reduced yields but concentrated flavours in surviving grapes. This concentration is evident in the wine's intense earthy minerality and complex aromatics of truffle, tobacco, and liquorice. The vintage's natural acidity provides excellent structure for the cherry and berry fruit, creating a wine that balances immediate appeal with long-term ageing potential.

Old vines produce smaller yields but more concentrated, complex fruit due to their deep root systems accessing diverse soil minerals. In Burgundy's limestone-rich soils, these mature vines contribute to the wine's distinctive slate and earthy characteristics. The reduced vigour of old vines also means the grapes ripen more evenly, resulting in the nuanced flavour profile that includes both bright fruit and savoury elements like earth and tobacco.

This wine's earthy, mineral-driven profile makes it exceptional with mushroom-based dishes, roasted game birds, or aged cheeses like Époisses or Camembert. The natural acidity and light body complement duck confit or coq au vin beautifully. The wine's truffle and tobacco notes also pair wonderfully with charcuterie, particularly pâtés and terrines that echo the wine's savoury complexity.

Serve slightly below room temperature at 14-16°C to highlight the wine's delicate aromatics and prevent the alcohol from overwhelming the subtle fruit. Decant 30 minutes before serving to allow the earthy, mineral notes to fully express themselves. Store horizontally in a cool, dark place - this wine will continue developing complexity over the next 5-8 years, with the tannins softening and secondary flavours of forest floor and spice emerging.
