A South Australian icon, with a hefty 4.6 Vivino rating to boot. The 97-point 2021 vintage Yeoman is a powerful, multi-layered and full-bodied wine, heaving with fruit richness that is seemlessly intergrated with silky tannin. Not for the faint-hearted, but for lovers of gloriously intense Shiraz!

Why do we love this wine?

The fruit for the Yeoman is sourced from four blocks, ranging from 20 through to over 140 years old, and it is an absolute stunner each year it is made. Deep maroon purple in the glass with a highly aromatic and powerful bouquet of mixed spice, peppercorn, toasty oak, and a decadent nuttiness you can only get from super high-quality oak. Rich and intense blackberry, mulberry, and cocoa notes follow through from the nose to its highly sophisticated and incredible palate. Decant to drink now or cellar for the next 20-odd years and be gloriously rewarded.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Yeoman Shiraz draws fruit from vines ranging from 20 to over 140 years old, creating exceptional complexity and depth. Old vines naturally produce lower yields with more concentrated flavours, as their deep root systems access unique mineral profiles from the soil. The century-plus old blocks contribute an intensity and character that simply cannot be replicated in younger plantings, delivering the rich blackberry and mulberry notes that define this wine.

This Shiraz offers remarkable versatility - you can decant and enjoy it immediately for its vibrant fruit expression, or cellar it for up to 20 years for a truly rewarding experience. McLaren Vale Shiraz typically develops beautiful tertiary flavours like leather, tobacco, and earth during extended cellaring, while the wine's full-bodied structure and quality oak will support graceful ageing. The high critic scores (95-97 points) indicate exceptional ageing potential.

The consistent 95-97 point scores reflect the exceptional quality of McLaren Vale's terroir combined with Pertaringa's winemaking expertise. Critics particularly praise the wine's balance between power and elegance, noting how the old vine fruit creates layers of complexity that unfold beautifully. The integration of high-quality oak with intense fruit flavours, plus the wine's ability to express both immediate appeal and long-term potential, places it among Australia's finest Shiraz expressions.

This rich, oaky Shiraz pairs magnificently with robust red meats like grilled lamb, beef steaks, or slow-cooked osso buco where the wine's tannins complement the protein's richness. The chocolate and spice notes make it excellent with aged hard cheeses or dark chocolate desserts. The wine's full body and complex flavour profile can also handle bold flavours like barbecued meats with smoky marinades or hearty game dishes.

McLaren Vale is renowned as one of Australia's premier Shiraz regions, with its Mediterranean climate and diverse soils creating ideal conditions for this varietal. The region's proximity to the ocean moderates temperatures, allowing for extended ripening periods that develop complex flavours while maintaining natural acidity. The combination of old vine plantings, like those used in the Yeoman, and the region's winemaking heritage produces Shiraz with distinctive chocolate, spice, and berry characteristics that have earned international acclaim.
