Why do we love this wine?

All the components of a Burgundian winner, and that's no easy crowd to stand out in. What I love about this wine particularly is the celebration of fruit - so often Burgundy can get bogged down in the 'other' of the terroir: wet earth, barnyard, mushroom. This has got those layers of complexity, but sitting neatly on top of that is bright, exuberant red, blue and even black fruits (by way of dark cherry). Top notch. Full marks. Brilliant booze.

Frequently Asked Questions

While many Burgundies emphasise earthy, barnyard and mushroom characteristics, this Pierre Naigeon celebrates vibrant fruit expression. The wine showcases bright red, blue and dark cherry flavours that sit prominently above the traditional terroir complexities. This fruit-forward approach makes it more approachable while maintaining the sophisticated layers that define quality Burgundy.

Hautes Côtes de Nuits represents excellent value in Burgundy's hierarchy, offering estate-grown Pinot Noir at more accessible prices than the famous Côte d'Or villages. Located in the hills above the prestigious Côte de Nuits, this appellation benefits from similar limestone soils and climate while avoiding the premium pricing of neighbouring grand cru vineyards. The 4.2 Vivino rating confirms this wine punches above its weight class.

Serve this wine slightly below room temperature at 14-16°C to highlight its bright fruit character and textured, savoury qualities. The medium body and cherry-pepper-raspberry profile pairs beautifully with roasted duck, grilled salmon, or mushroom risotto. Decanting for 30 minutes will help integrate the wine's complex layers and allow the fruit to shine even more brilliantly.

The textured quality refers to the wine's substantial mouthfeel and tannin structure that gives weight and grip on the palate. The savoury elements likely include subtle pepper notes, herbal undertones, and mineral complexity from Burgundy's limestone soils. Together, these characteristics create a wine that's both immediately pleasurable and intellectually engaging, balancing fruit sweetness with sophisticated dry elements.

The 2020 vintage in Burgundy was marked by warm, dry conditions that concentrated flavours while maintaining good acidity. This Pierre Naigeon exemplifies the vintage's success, showing intense fruit character without losing elegance or balance. The wine's current drinking beautifully suggests 2020 produced approachable wines that don't require extensive cellaring, though quality examples like this will continue developing complexity over the next 5-8 years.
