Why do we love this wine?

Pierre Naigeon took a step away from high intervention with his 2018 vintage, instead eschewing any additives and minimalising sulphur usage. Not every vintage allows this hands-off approach, but 2018 certainly was one. And it really shows through in the wines. L'Olivier's fruit is quite bright, hinting at red currants and blackberries. The fresh and energetic palate sits in the more medium-bodied range, finishing up with firm yet approachable tannins. You'll find this showing really well now but there's at least a decade left of prime drinking in the bottle.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2018 vintage allowed Pierre Naigeon to adopt a remarkably hands-off winemaking approach, eschewing additives and minimising sulphur usage. This low-intervention style isn't possible every year, as it requires exceptional fruit quality and ideal growing conditions. The result is a wine that expresses its terroir more purely, showcasing the natural character of the old vines and Fixin's unique soil composition. This minimal manipulation approach often produces wines with greater complexity and authentic regional expression.

While this Burgundy is drinking beautifully now with its bright fruit and approachable tannins, it has at least a decade of prime drinking ahead. Burgundian Pinot Noir typically develops secondary characteristics like earthy mushroom, leather, and game notes as it ages. The old vine fruit provides excellent structure for ageing, and the firm tannins will gradually soften and integrate. For those who enjoy more developed flavours, consider cellaring half your bottles for 5-8 years.

Vielles Vignes translates to 'old vines' in French, typically referring to vines over 25-30 years old. Older vines produce smaller yields but more concentrated, complex fruit due to their deep root systems accessing diverse soil layers. In Burgundy, old vines are particularly prized as they've adapted to their specific terroir over decades, producing grapes with greater mineral complexity and flavour intensity. This concentration is evident in L'Olivier's bright fruit character and structured palate.

This wine's medium body and bright acidity make it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with classic Burgundian cuisine like coq au vin or beef bourguignon. The blackberry and red currant notes complement roasted duck, lamb, or mushroom-based dishes beautifully. Its approachable tannins won't overpower lighter proteins like salmon or pork tenderloin. The earthy forest floor characteristics also pair wonderfully with aged cheeses, particularly soft-ripened varieties like Camembert or Brie de Meaux.

Fixin sits at the northern end of the Côte de Nuits, often overshadowed by famous neighbours like Gevrey-Chambertin, making it excellent value for authentic Burgundy. The appellation produces wines that are typically more structured and earthy than southern Côte de Nuits villages, with excellent ageing potential. L'Olivier vineyard benefits from ideal southeast exposure and limestone-rich soils that impart the mineral backbone characteristic of quality Burgundy. These wines offer genuine Burgundian character without the premium pricing of more famous villages.
