Why do we love this wine?

This reserve shiraz does not compromise on quality; single vineyard fruit is thoroughly vetted, partially whole berry fermented then matured for 18 months in 50% new French oak barrels. We end up with a seriously classy drop boasting violets, lively dark fruit, and chalky, fine grained tannins. The seamless integration of the oak is what really sets this shiraz apart from its contemporaries, the wine flows across the palate like silk and builds to a softly tannic and plum driven finish. Not only a well made wine but a deeply enjoyable one that will live long in the cellars of those who have the patience.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Pirathon Gold Shiraz stands out through its meticulous winemaking approach, featuring partial whole berry fermentation and 18 months maturation in 50% new French oak. This technique preserves more fruit character while adding complexity, creating what critics describe as seamless oak integration that flows 'like silk' across the palate. The single vineyard sourcing ensures consistency and terroir expression that mass-produced Barossa wines often lack.

With its full-bodied structure, fine-grained tannins, and excellent oak integration, this Shiraz has significant cellaring potential extending well beyond a decade. The 96-point Wine Orbit rating and 'Museum Release' designation indicate exceptional ageing prospects. Barossa Shiraz from quality producers typically peaks between 8-15 years, though this wine's balanced acidity and tannin structure suggest it could reward patient collectors for even longer.

The wine's full body, plum-driven character, and chalky tannins make it ideal for rich, protein-heavy dishes like slow-cooked lamb shanks, aged beef steaks, or game meats. The vanilla and oak notes complement barbecued meats beautifully, while the violet aromatics and fine tannins can handle strong cheeses like aged cheddar or blue cheese. The wine's silk-like texture also pairs wonderfully with mushroom-based dishes or hearty stews.

Absolutely - decanting will significantly enhance your experience with this reserve Shiraz. The wine's complex structure and 18-month oak maturation means it benefits from 1-2 hours of breathing to fully express its violet aromatics and dark fruit character. Decanting also helps integrate the tannins further, allowing the wine's 'silk-like' texture to shine through and revealing the subtle interplay between fruit and French oak.

Partial whole berry fermentation involves fermenting some grapes without crushing them first, creating fermentation inside the intact berries. This technique produces more vibrant fruit flavours, enhanced aromatics like the violets noted in this wine, and softer, more refined tannins. It's a premium winemaking method that adds complexity and elegance, contributing to the wine's fine-grained tannin structure and the seamless integration that sets it apart from conventionally made Shiraz.
