Why do we love this wine?

This winery is recognisable from the second you get an eye on the bottles, and for good reason. Pirathon has been at the fore of producing those styles Aussies love from reds out of the valley. The dense fruit profile has been balanced by 18 months in a variety of American, French and Hungarian oak barrels. Dark fruits such as plums and blackberries step forward and there’s plenty of secondary notes such as cedar, pastille and chocolate. If Barossa shiraz is your jam (but not too jammy of course), then you can turn to this number to give you the happiness you seek.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pirathon's distinctive approach involves ageing this Shiraz for 18 months across three different oak origins - American, French, and Hungarian barrels. This multi-oak maturation creates exceptional complexity, where each oak type contributes unique characteristics: American oak adds vanilla and coconut notes, French oak provides subtle spice and structure, while Hungarian oak delivers distinctive toasted flavours. The result is a wine that showcases the dense fruit character Barossa is famous for, while offering sophisticated secondary notes of cedar, pastille, and chocolate.

Serve this wine at 16-18°C to allow its complex flavours to fully express themselves. The rich plum and blackberry fruit, combined with chocolate and cedar notes, makes it an excellent match for grilled red meats, aged cheeses, or hearty stews. Consider decanting 30-60 minutes before serving to soften the tannins and enhance the aromatic profile. The wine's full-bodied nature and oak integration also make it suitable for special occasions or cellaring for further development.

The dual 94-point scores from Ken Gargett and Wine Orbit, plus the Gold Medal from Japan Wine Competition, indicate exceptional quality that places this wine in the top tier of Australian Shiraz. These consistent high ratings from different critics suggest the wine successfully balances power with elegance - a hallmark of premium Barossa Shiraz. The international recognition, particularly from Japan's wine competition, demonstrates its appeal extends beyond Australian palates to sophisticated global wine markets.

Yes, this Shiraz is certified vegan-friendly, meaning no animal-derived products were used during the winemaking process. Traditional wine fining agents like egg whites, isinglass (fish bladder), or gelatin are replaced with plant-based or mineral alternatives such as bentonite clay or pea protein. This certification ensures the wine maintains its rich, full-bodied character while meeting dietary requirements, making it accessible to a broader range of wine enthusiasts without compromising on quality or flavour.

The 2019 vintage benefits from excellent growing conditions and 18 months of oak maturation, providing a solid foundation for ageing. While delicious now, this full-bodied Shiraz has the structure and tannin backbone to evolve beautifully over 8-12 years. The dense fruit flavours will gradually integrate further with the oak, developing tertiary notes of leather, tobacco, and earthy complexity. The wine's balance between fruit concentration and oak treatment suggests it will reward patient cellaring while remaining approachable for immediate enjoyment.
