Why do we love this wine?

Geoff Johnston, an absolute icon of McLaren Vale. To know his name is to know the region, thanks to the devotion of talented and hard-working wine growers, a collective who single-handedly put this unassuming beachside region on a global stage. In honour of his 50th vintage, this wine speaks to Geoff’s character: determined, endearing, and engaging. Geoff planted shiraz with his old man ‘Digby’ back in 1971, and today, this block of vines shows so much character reminiscent of time and place. Shiraz like this is knee-weakeningly good. Upfront dark fruits; plums and blackberries, carried along with mocha tones before reaching peaks of vanilla and spice (and all things nice). Just like the person it celebrates, this wine is all about a father and his son’s legacy. A celebration of family, in the wine game for the long haul.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine celebrates Geoff Johnston's 50th vintage milestone, honouring an absolute icon who helped put McLaren Vale on the global wine map. The grapes come from a specific block planted by Geoff and his father 'Digby' in 1971, giving it nearly five decades of vine maturity and terroir expression. This generational legacy, combined with the wine's exceptional 96-point Wine Orbit rating, represents the pinnacle of what McLaren Vale Shiraz can achieve when tradition meets excellence.

Serve this wine at 16-18°C to allow its complex layers of dark fruit, mocha, vanilla and spice to fully express themselves. The full-bodied palate weight and rich flavour profile make it perfect for hearty dishes like slow-cooked lamb, aged beef steaks, or rich game meats. The wine's structure and intensity can also complement strong cheeses and dark chocolate desserts, while its fruit-forward character pairs beautifully with barbecued meats - a McLaren Vale classic.

The combination of blackberry and plum with allspice creates a classic McLaren Vale Shiraz profile that balances fruit richness with warming spice complexity. The mocha and vanilla notes suggest careful oak integration, likely from quality French or American barrels that complement rather than dominate the fruit. This flavour profile indicates a wine with both immediate appeal and the structure for medium-term cellaring, where the spice elements will integrate further with the dark fruit core.

The 2020 vintage in McLaren Vale was marked by ideal growing conditions that produced wines of exceptional concentration and balance. This vintage benefited from a mild summer with well-timed rainfall, allowing for extended ripening periods that enhanced flavour development while maintaining natural acidity. For a milestone wine celebrating 50 years of winemaking, the 2020 vintage provides the perfect foundation to showcase both the vineyard's maturity and the region's potential at its peak.

With its full-bodied structure, quality fruit source from 50-year-old vines, and excellent vintage conditions, this Shiraz has the backbone for 10-15 years of cellaring. The wine is drinking beautifully now, showing primary fruit characters, but will develop greater complexity over the next 5-7 years as the tannins soften and secondary flavours emerge. The integration of oak, fruit, and spice will reach optimal harmony around 2027-2030, though personal preference for either youthful vibrancy or mature complexity will determine your ideal drinking window.
