Why do we love this wine?

If you don’t know by now, we think it’s time for you to loop yourself in. The Pirramimma Limited Edition Shiraz comes from the fruit out of the famous “War Horse” and “Ironstone” blocks. The vines are old and what they lack in quantity (yield), they make up for in superb quality. Full bodied, but balanced with pepper and spice, there are just so many layers to discover in this wine. Laden with luscious, ripe blackberries, earthy blackcurrants, mocha, hints of cedar and a dollop of liquorice, you’re in for a treat with this divine, velvety red.

Ken Gargett

Ken Gargett

"A seriously good McLaren Vale Shiraz, with a very long and generous future ahead of it. Again, 2022 shows that it deserves to rank with the top years for the region. The colour here is a near black/maroon. The wine is very approachable and that generosity is immediately apparent. We have notes of mocha, licorice, soy, plums, coffee beans, delicatessen meats, chocolate, leather, warm earth, blackberries and cocoa powder. So much going on here. Supple and delicious, there is a creamy texture, fine balance and excellent length. Enjoy this for at least the next ten to twelve years." - Ken Gargett

" From the get-go you are going to enjoy tucking into this mighty impressive Shiraz. It’s opulent and immensely powerful with masses of dark fruit revealing characteristic dark spicy plum, chocolate and toasty oak. The palate is firm with its chalky tannin influence combined with well-managed oak. A subtle and gentle blue fruit character reveals. This is a classy wine. Score: 95/100 Cellar: 15 years" - Ray Jordan, Wine Pilot

Frequently Asked Questions

These famous vineyard blocks at Pirramimma feature old vines that naturally produce lower yields, concentrating all their energy into creating exceptional fruit quality rather than quantity. Old vines develop deeper root systems that access unique mineral profiles in the soil, contributing to the wine's complex layers of blackberry, blackcurrant, and earthy characteristics. This is a classic example of how vine age directly translates to wine complexity and depth.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create ideal conditions for producing rich, full-bodied Shiraz with distinctive regional character. The area's warm days and cool sea breezes help retain the pepper and spice notes that balance this wine's luscious fruit flavours. The region's ironstone and clay soils contribute to the wine's earthy blackcurrant notes and structural backbone, while the coastal influence adds freshness to prevent the full-bodied style from becoming overly heavy.

This wine's rich blackberry and mocha flavours, combined with its peppery spice and cedar notes, make it perfect for robust dishes like grilled lamb, beef brisket, or aged cheeses. The liquorice and chocolate undertones pair beautifully with game meats or dishes featuring mushrooms and herbs. The wine's full-bodied structure can stand up to bold flavours, while its balanced acidity cuts through rich, fatty foods effectively.

With scores ranging from 94-95 points from respected critics like Ray Jordan and Ken Gargett, plus a Gold Medal from USA Wine Ratings, this Shiraz demonstrates exceptional quality for its price point. These high ratings indicate the wine successfully balances power with elegance, showing the complexity and craftsmanship expected from premium McLaren Vale Shiraz. The consistent recognition across multiple judging panels suggests this vintage represents outstanding value in the full-bodied red wine category.

While this 2022 Shiraz is already showing beautifully with its velvety texture and integrated tannins, McLaren Vale Shiraz from quality producers like Pirramimma typically develops additional complexity over 5-10 years. The wine's full-bodied structure and balanced acidity suggest it will evolve gracefully, with the current fruit-forward character gradually giving way to more savoury, earthy notes. For immediate enjoyment, decant for 30-60 minutes to fully appreciate its layered complexity.
