Just when we thought Powell & Sons couldn’t impress us more, they raised the bar higher than it’s ever been before. All star fruit. All the best oak. All in one neat little parcel. If this doesn’t tickle your fancy, truly nothing will.

Why do we love this wine?

Just when we thought Powell & Sons couldn’t impress us more, they raised the bar higher than it’s ever been before. This seems to good to be true, right? We’re pinching ourselves too: it’s not every day that you get the best sub-regions of the Barossa (Marananga playing a big part of that), with the fruit of each vineyard separately nurtured and carefully blended after 18 months ageing in French oak. The name says it all, but this isn’t just any blend. It’s the royal king of blends. All shiraz. All star fruit. All the best oak. All in one neat little parcel. If this doesn’t tickle your fancy, truly nothing will.

Frequently Asked Questions

This isn't your typical single-vineyard Shiraz - it's a masterful blend sourcing fruit from the Barossa's premier sub-regions, with Marananga playing a starring role. Each vineyard's fruit is vinified separately and then carefully blended after 18 months in French oak, allowing the winemaker to showcase the unique terroir characteristics of different sites. This approach creates complexity and depth that single-vineyard wines often can't achieve, as the best attributes of each location complement and enhance the others.

The 2021 vintage in the Barossa was exceptional, earning this wine a 'Killer Vintage' rating. This vintage benefited from ideal growing conditions that allowed the Shiraz grapes to develop intense concentration while maintaining excellent balance. The cooler nights preserved the wine's natural acidity, while warm days ensured full phenolic ripeness, resulting in the blood plum and allspice characteristics that define this wine's flavour profile.

The wine's full-bodied nature and rich French oak treatment make it perfect for hearty, flavourful dishes that can match its intensity. The blood plum and allspice notes pair beautifully with grilled red meats, particularly lamb with rosemary or beef with peppercorn sauce. The wine's structure also complements aged cheeses and rich, tomato-based pasta dishes, while its spice elements enhance Middle Eastern and North African cuisine.

Powell & Son has earned recognition as both an 'Icon Producer' and operates from a 'Five Star Halliday Rated Winery', placing them among Australia's elite wine producers. Their meticulous approach to viticulture and winemaking, demonstrated in wines like The Blend, showcases their ability to consistently produce wines that express the best of Barossa terroir. This reputation is built on decades of experience and an unwavering commitment to quality that has made them a favourite among both critics and wine enthusiasts.

Store this full-bodied Shiraz in a cool, dark place at around 12-15°C to preserve its complex flavours developed through French oak ageing. Serve at 16-18°C to allow the blood plum and allspice characteristics to fully express themselves - too cold and you'll mute the wine's aromatic complexity, too warm and the alcohol will dominate. Decanting for 30-60 minutes before serving will help integrate the oak and fruit elements, particularly given the wine's substantial structure and concentration.
