Why do we love this wine?

Ruby - known to bring good luck and fortune, is a rare red gem that coincidentally also happens to be the name of an incredible wine style. Hailing from the famous Burmester winery in Portugal, is a luxury product in itself. Brilliantly red in colour, it is also delightfully sweet, with sugary fruits such as macerated cherries, candied treats and a little bit of black tea. Simply wonderful. Deliberately made as a young wine, ‘ruby’ is all about retaining youthfulness, beauty and freshness. Made from your favourite Portuguese varieties: touriga nacional, touriga franca, tinta roriz, tinto cão, tinta barroca and tinta amarela (yep, we totally remembered all those off the top of our heads). This is the best way to enter yourself into the realm of fortified wines and the world of ports. With a friendly sugar balance, and bright red colour - this ticks plenty of boxes for us. An all class act, Ruby is.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ruby port is deliberately crafted to preserve youthfulness and freshness, unlike aged tawny ports that develop nutty, oxidative characteristics over time. This Burmester Ruby maintains its vibrant red colour and bright fruit flavours by spending less time in wood, resulting in a wine that showcases the pure essence of Portuguese grape varieties like Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca. The style prioritises immediate drinkability and exuberant fruit character over the complex, evolved flavours found in vintage or aged ports.

Serve this Burmester Ruby Port slightly chilled at around 16-18°C to enhance its fresh fruit characteristics and balance the sweetness. Pour into smaller glasses to concentrate the aromas of macerated cherries and candied fruits. Ruby port pairs beautifully with dark chocolate desserts, berry tarts, or strong cheeses like Stilton, where the wine's natural sweetness complements rich, intense flavours. It's also excellent as a digestif after dinner.

This ruby port offers an approachable entry point into fortified wines due to its friendly sugar balance and familiar fruit flavours like blackcurrant and chocolate. Unlike more complex vintage ports or dry sherries, ruby port's straightforward sweetness and bright character make it immediately appealing to newcomers. The Burmester name also represents quality Portuguese winemaking traditions, ensuring you're experiencing authentic port craftsmanship while developing your palate for more sophisticated fortified wine styles.

This ruby port showcases a blend of traditional Portuguese varieties including Touriga Nacional (often called the king of Portuguese grapes), Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and others that contribute distinct characteristics. Touriga Nacional provides structure and floral aromatics, while Tinta Roriz adds depth and colour intensity. The combination creates the wine's signature profile of raisin sweetness, chocolate richness, and blackcurrant fruit, all unified through the fortification process that preserves these varietal characteristics in their most vibrant form.

Once opened, this ruby port will maintain its quality for 4-6 weeks when stored upright in the refrigerator with the cork firmly replaced. The fortification process (adding grape spirit during fermentation) gives port natural preservation qualities that far exceed regular table wines. However, ruby ports are best enjoyed relatively fresh to preserve their bright fruit character and vibrant colour. Unlike vintage ports that can improve with decades of cellaring, this NV ruby is designed for immediate enjoyment and doesn't require extended ageing.
